California Hearing Addresses Oil Refinery Rules

Residents of neighborhoods surrounding three of California's largest oil refineries are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to crack down on plant emissions, saying pollution is choking their children and endangering their health.

The residents of Los Angeles' Wilmington area were among about a dozen speakers to address an EPA panel hearing Wednesday on a proposed rule requiring stricter emissions controls and monitoring standards for refineries.

Several speakers say they have suffered from asthma, cystic fibrosis and other ailments they believe are caused by the refineries located near the ports of LA and Long Beach.

Representatives of the petroleum industry say their largest concern is the safety of their workers and the surrounding community and they believe they are doing a good job of maintaining that under current regulations.
