5 Injured in Escalator Accident at NJ Rail Station

VIDEO: An escalator operating in reverse caused commotion, injuries at a Jersey City station.

Authorities say five people were injured when an escalator changed direction at a commuter rail station in Jersey City, N.J.

Witnesses say panic ensued when the escalator malfunctioned at the Exchange Place PATH station on Monday morning. There were screams and some people jumped off the escalator mid-ride.

Port Authority spokesman Ron Marsico says five people suffered non-life threatening injuries. They include back and neck pain, as well as scrapes, bumps and bruises.

Marsico says three people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Nick Lukish of Brooklyn, N.Y., says he was headed to work and midway up the escalator when the moving staircase started going down.

The 33-year-old says he saw a stampede of people at the base and sustained cuts when he and others jumped on an adjacent escalator.
