Police Downplay Link to Calif. Girl's Death

Investigators say a brazen kidnapping attempt not far from where an 8-year-old Calaveras County girl was stabbed to death in her home most likely is a bizarre coincidence.

Investigators on Wednesday called the link between the murder Saturday and a man who attempted to nab a toddler 50 miles away on Tuesday "a shot in the dark."

Still investigators have collected DNA samples from the 44-year-old who forced his way into a woman's apartment and attempted to take her daughter.

On Saturday, Leila Fowler was stabbed to death in her home by a man described as having long gray hair. Her 12-year-old brother, who saw the man, said he is about 6-feet tall.

So far Calaveras County Sheriff's investigators have not shown the boy a photo lineup of the suspect.
