A teenager who was shot in the face could have survived had he received immediate medical attention, a forensic pathologist testified Wednesday in the trial of the alleged shooter who's also accused of taking a selfie of the dying teen and fleeing without seeking aid.
Dr. Cyril Wecht told Westmoreland County jurors that 16-year-old Ryan Mangan didn't die immediately and "would have survived with appropriate medical care," The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/2lMfMSC ) reported.
"For 45 minutes to one hour he would have lived," Wecht testified in the trial of Maxwell Morton, 18, who was 16 at the time of the February 2015 shooting and is charged with first-degree murder.
Ryan sustained a gunshot wound under his left eye and slowly suffocated as blood drained into his lungs, Wecht testified. But the wound itself caused no fatal brain or spinal injuries, he said.
District Attorney John Peck contends that instead of seeking help, Morton used a cellphone to take a picture of himself smiling in front of the body slumped in a chair and then fled.
Earlier, jurors were shown the photograph during testimony from a Springville, Wisconsin, teenager who said Morton bragged about the killing as they played an online video game that evening, saying he "got his first body."
The teen said he thought it was a prank until Morton texted a link of a news item about the death and sent the selfie via Snapchat, a social networking site that allows users to send images that disappear in about 10 seconds. The message was followed with a text that said, "Told you," he testified.
The teenager said he immediately took a screen shot of the selfie and told his mother, who called police in Pennsylvania and testified she told authorities, "you probably won't believe this, but we have a Snapchat of the murder."
The defense has argued that the teens were playing with the gun, and it accidentally fired.
The trial continues Thursday, and defense attorney Pat Thomassey said Morton plans to testify.
