Possible successors for Sen. Hillary Clinton

A list of people thought to be interested in replacing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton if she is confirmed as secretary of state. The appointment will be made by Democratic Gov. David Paterson.

— Caroline Kennedy. Daughter of President John F. Kennedy, niece of former New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Never held elected office. President of John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, member of John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award Committee. Director of Commission on Presidential Debates and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Honorary chairwoman of American Ballet Theatre. Vice-chairwoman of Fund for Public Schools, New York City. Married to Edwin Schlossberg. Three children.

— New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Son of former Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo. Elected as New York's top law enforcement official in 2006. Campaign for governor in 2002 flamed out when he said Republican Gov. George Pataki had merely held Rudy Giuliani's coat after the 9/11 attacks. Served as President Bill Clinton's secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1997-2001. Divorced from Kerry Kennedy, Caroline's cousin. The couple has three children.

— Nassau County District Executive Tom Suozzi. Rose to prominence with his losing 2006 primary battle against former Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Married with three children.

— Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. Elected mayor in 2005. Served five years in the state Senate, first African-American elected to that chamber outside New York City.

— Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. Has led borough since 2001 after four years on the New York City Council. Married with four children.

— Rep. Jerrold Nadler. Elected to the House in 1992 representing parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Spent 16 years in state Assembly. Serves as assistant whip and a senior member of House Judiciary Committee and House Transportation Committee. Married with one child.

— Rep. Steve Israel. Elected in 2000 from Long Island district. Serves as assistant Democratic whip, sits on the House Appropriations Committee. Married with two children.
