Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry is back in the hospital after a recent kidney transplant, but doctors say complications don't mean his body is rejecting the organ.
Spokeswoman Natalie Williams says Barry went to the hospital for a routine post-surgery checkup Monday morning. After he returned home, Williams says doctors called Barry back to the hospital and readmitted him.
She says doctors had discovered large amounts of air in his stomach. Barry had been complaining of extreme discomfort, and doctors determined that was due to the combination of medicines he's taking.
The former mayor, a current D.C. Council member, received the kidney from a friend in February.
The transplant came as prosecutors were seeking to have him jailed for failing to file 2007 tax returns.
