Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has been released from Howard University Hospital after returning as a precaution following his kidney transplant.
Barry was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon in time to celebrate his 73rd birthday. The Ward 8 council member stopped by the city's Wilson Building where supporters greeted him with balloons and sang "Happy Birthday."
Barry had planned to return to his council duties this week, following his kidney transplant on Feb. 20, but instead returned to the hospital. Spokeswoman Natalie Williams has said Barry was complaining of discomfort.
Barry's doctors have deemed the surgery a success.
