EPA Plans Hearings on DDT Deposit off SoCal Coast

EPA holding hearings on plan to deal with huge DDT deposit on seafloor off Southern California

The Environmental Protection Agency is holding the first of several public hearings to discuss an estimated $36 million plan to deal with a vast deposit of the pesticide DDT on the ocean floor off Southern California's Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The proposal to be discussed Tuesday afternoon would place a cap of sand over the most contaminated part of the area.

Montrose Chemical Corp. released 110 tons of the banned pesticide and 10 tons of toxic PCBs into the sewers from 1947 through 1971.

In 2000, Montrose and two other chemical companies agreed to pay a total of $73 million to help restore the ocean environment off Palos Verdes, which had been declared among the most hazardous places in the country.
