Lightning-Sparked Fires in Shasta County Growing

Lightning-sparked fires in Shasta County growing fast, but danger to homes fades

Fire officials say a series of lightning-sparked fires in Shasta County grew six-fold overnight and have now burned more than 11 square miles in a sparsely populated area.

The wildfires were 10 percent contained after being started during a weekend storm. No evacuations are in place in the county.

Firefighters also are battling blazes in nearby Lassen National Forest, where mandatory evacuation orders on 130 homes were lifted Tuesday. The larger of the fires is only about 5 percent contained.

Evacuation orders also have been lifted in southern Monterey County, where a blaze covering 5.5 square miles forced about 200 people from their homes Monday.

State fire officials say crews made good progress during the night, and residents have been allowed to return.

That fire is now about 75 percent contained.
