To rome, now. And a case that will reveal secrets from the pope's household. Pope benedict's butler has been charged with stealing documents from the pope's desk, passing them on to a reporter. He will take the stand today in a trial. And jeffrey kofman is there to cover it. Reporter: The pope's butler says he leaked documents to expose evil corruption in the church. Today, he is facing vatican justice. And we are getting a rare glimpse inside a world that feeds on secrecy. He seemed calm, serious. A bit tense at times. Reporter: No one was closer to the pope, waking him in the morning, bringing him his meals. But investigators raided his apartment, they carried off 82 boxes of evidence, including stolen documents. He is accused of being the source of damning leaks that filled the papers here all spring. Saying the vatican was a sea of prupgs and coneyism. People buying audiences with the pope. It became painfully clear he does not have his hands on the rudder. He looks very much like a weak pope. Reporter: The pope returned to the vatican yesterday after three months at his summer residence outside rome. At 85, he is noticeably in decline. The papacy -- the leader blind to the intrigue and infighting all around him. As for the 46-year-old father of three who lives at the vatican, he has said he leaked the documents out of loyalty to the pope, inspired by the holy spirit. No one here believes the butler really did it on his own. He has been on the stand all morning, sticking to his defense. These proceedings expected to end by the weekend. He could go to jail for four years. But he's asked the pope for a pardon. That's very likely, we're told, what will happen.
