As a fighter pilot in Vietnam, John McCain was shot down and taken prisoner in 1967, and despite being offered early release in 1968 -- which he refused -- was held for almost six years. He told Charles Gibson, "Once you're deprived … of the essence of America, which is individual freedom and choice and opportunity, and you know, friends, neighbors, all those things, that's when you really miss it … and it made me really fall in love with my country -- not just respect and honor it and want to serve it -- but love it."
