harrowing story of survival. The sweet but tough 89-year-old woman held captive in the trunk of her own car, as teen captors held her in that trunk for two days. But what happened in the end proves that kindness prevails over cruelty. Here's gio benitez. Reporter: Margaret smith SURVIVED 1940s AMERICA. Graduating from college, when so many women didn't. But at 89 years old, what might ha been her darkest test of all began with a simple trip for ice cream, when suddenly, while in her car at the convenient store, two young girls knocked on the window. They wanted a ride. First, I decided not to. Then, I said, well, a good deed. Reporter: That good deed became a nightmare. The girls grabbing her keys, forcing her out and putting her in the trunk. They shoved me in and slammed the door. Then, they took off, flying. Me in the car. Reporter: Temperatures near freezing. Margaret left locked in her own trunk for two days. No food. No medicine. No water. I was scared. But I was determined. Reporter: After nearly 48 hours in that dark trunk, police say the two girls, just 14 and 15 years old, let her out, leaving her in a remote cemetery. She crawled her way to safety. Now, two teens have been charged with her kidnapping and carjacking. They're being held on bail. But tonight, margaret has a message for all. You have to be kind to other people if you want somebody to be kind to you. Reporter: Viewers who heard margaret's story writing, I'm with you, margaret. An ounce of kindness is worth a pound of gold. Tonight, she's put the ordeal behind her. Still convinced kindness got her this far. Gio benitez, abc news, new york.
