One of the most tense moments of the cold war, the spy who betrayed the u.S., Turning over secrets to the russians, the drama playing out in the abc mini series the assets. Dan harris sits down with the former agent sandy grimes about how she brought that traitor down. Reporter: At the height of the cold war a cia officer walks into the russian embassy in washington d.C. And hands over a treasure trove of secrets. This, the trail, is at the heart of the new abc mini series, the assets, a show inspired by the real life case of aldridge ames. What you did you did for money. Stop me if I say anything that's wrong. Reporter: The assets takes us inside the hunt to take ames down which was led in part by sandy grimes, a wife, mother and cia agent seen here on the show and seen here today. He wiped out your ability to have eyes and ears on the ground in our number one enemy. Exactly. Reporter: She first joined THE CIA IN THE EARLY 1970s HAD And had an extremely sensitive job, helping to manage the agency's relationship with it's crown jewel, the highest ranking soviet officer ever recruited. You took it upon yourself to keep them alive. Aldridge ames gave the kgb a list of every known human asset the cia had in the soviet union. That list had 20 names on it. Within a year, ten of them were executed. A general seen here in this remarkable footage arrested by soviet agents. He was later shot. It's -- still hard to talk about. Reporter: It didn't take long to for grimes to suspect ames. He had an affair with a young woman named rosarrosario. They brought a brand new house and ames started wearing expensive suits and driving a jaguar. Grimes' work led to his arrest and that of his wife. He new it full well and did it basically for money.
