The grief stretches all the way to Chicago. Three Americans gunned down as they were tried to help heal the children in that country. Raising the question can any American even a civilian, even a doctor be safe there now? Tonight one of the victim's wooi is sending a message tonight. A surprising one for us. ABC's chief global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz tells us what this means for the United States. Reporter: This attack stands out for the sheer brutality and heart break. This is an American doctor killed today. Dr. Jerry umanos who for more than seven years worked to save mothers and babies in Afghanistan. Here with Dr. Jerry umanos. This is Dr. Umanos two years ago interviewed by a station about his life-saving work. This baby has done well for how small the baby was. What are the chances? Most of these kids would be dead. Reporter: The Philadelphia based Christian organization treats 37,000 patients a year, including 60 children annually with cleft pal lot. Near the entrance of the hospital Dr. Umanos was gunned down as he greeted two other Americans, a father and son and Afghan security guard opened fire on the group at close range killing them all. Umanos' wife volunteered in Afghanistan got the call along with her son early this morning at the couple's Chicago home. My family has suffered a great loss. Our hearts are aching for our loss. We're also aching for the loss of the other families as well as the loss and the multiple losses that the Afghan people are today the attack is one of so many recently. The violence has scared away some eight organizations but jerry umanos' widow assisted the Afghans who badly need help should not be abandoned. The others killed and injured have not been identified. Today's attack comes as American tr troops are drawing down. This is a tough one tonight. Thank you so much.
