Now to the fierce winter weather battering a huge stretch of the west tonight with blinding snow and whipping winds. This evening, abc's clayton sandell reporting in from denver where many drivers have already been stranded. Reporter: Planes were almost invisible at denver's airport today. As a blizzard pounded colorado's front range, a travel nightmare, at least 500 flights canceled. Roads from colorado's mountains to the plains shut down. Tow trucks were busy rescuing stranded drivers. Over the next 24 hours, we'll see the biggest impact coming from severe weather, damaging winds, even a few tornadoes on the south plains. This should be interstate 35 on eastbound from dallas and oklahoma city into eastern oklahoma. Reporter: The storm stretches from utah all of the way to the great lakes. Today, cleanup continues after massive storms in the northeast. These homes in plum island, massachusetts, claimed by angry seas. The storm is now targeting the plains and the midwest with heavy snow. Anyone with a snow shovel or a snowblower, will be very busy. It's snowing out here. That's the thing. I actually enjoy it. It's nice and quiet. Reporter: It's these blowing winds, the whiteout conditions that are causing most of the headaches. Interstate 70 from here to the kansas border is shut down tonight. Police are urging people to stay off the roads.
