from the coast, because we told you about the snow. The superstorm has been dumping on the middle of the nation. Well, it's also put families in danger. There are daring snow rescues under way in maryland and abc's lisa stark has that story. Reporter: Western maryland remains buried in snow. Up to two feet in some areas. One of eight states walloped with blizzard conditions when sandy roared through. In west virginia even those sent out to rescue others had to be rescued. And at the snowshoe mountain resort snow drifted into piles three feet high whipped by 60-mile-an-hour winds. Truckers and travelers were forced to wait out the blizzard when a major highway from maryland to west virginia was shut down for 50 miles when we caught up with kevin, he had been stranded for 15 hours. I've been heres since, what, 8:00. Reporter: In maryland road crews struggled to open the roads. It's a little chain saw. It took mark wells five hours to hack through 50 to 60 trees just to get to work. That's pretty treacherous, the trees falling behind me as fast as I was cutting out in front of me. Reporter: Wells has had no sleep and more roads to clear. The problem isn't just the depth of it, it is deep, but it's the weight. This very heavy, wet snow. You can see the branches of the trees, they just can't stand up to it. All those falling trees brought down power lines. Like almost everyone here, the meyers have no electricity.
