Transcript for Jeff Gordon Celebrates Classic Cars
Finally tonight here, our person of the week. Once a year in detroit more than a million people show up in their american cars, others to watch them. And who else is showing up? Our person of the week. Hello. Reporter: Jeff gordon. David, how are you? Reporter: Great to see you. We headed to motor city, to meet up with racing legend jeff gordon. And we weren't the only ones. Every year, more than a million people come to watch drivers steer down detroit's famous woodward avenue. In their american classics -- the old -- and the new. I'm not a good passenger. Well, then you drive. You drive. Reporter: Gordon, giving me a lift in a brand new 2014 corvette stingray. Just off the line in kentucky. It's come a long way. They call her corvette. She belongs to the highway. Reporter: Tonight the brand new one, on the highway too. I love looking at the old classic cars, but I love driving the new ones. Reporter: This one, 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. Give me a little taste. A little taste? Reporter: Yeah. Now we have to find a place to brake and corner. Reporter: A place to brake and corner. He found a corner all right. The whole time, chopper 7 overhead. Do you always drive? Do you ever let your wife drive? My wife is an excellent driver, so I'm happy to drive -- to ride with her, but I do prefer to drive. Reporter: Two children. Ella and leo. Leo already wants to race. Jeff gordon began at 5. Collected 35 trophies. Is it incredible that this little kid who loved racing has been able to create this life out of it? It's unbelievable. The older I get the more appreciative and thankful I am for that, for my parents introducing me to it and supporting me. Never. So, yeah, it's amazing. Reporter: At 42 now, he says there's still a learning curve. With the new technology. I didn't have a clock to that. Yes, I don't even know how fast we were going, but zero to 60, yes, I would say we did it in three seconds. Reporter: While we did it in three seconds, other drivers here taking their time. That's what you call the old versus the new. Reporter: And I couldn't help myself. Pointing out to everyone who my chauffeur was. Reporter: You're not going to watch "world news." We didn't do too much damage. And jeff says the timing couldn't be more perfect. How badly do you think detroit needs this weekend? I think it's big, it's huge. They need it. And get detroit back to where it once was. And remind us of the heritage and backbone of this city, which is cars. Speeding into the weekend. We choose jeff gordon and all the proud drivers descending on detroit tonight. He said he went easy on me. I drive next time.
