Transcript for New Jersey's Governor Bans Gay Therapy
Thank you dr. Richard besser. Today an american govern known for his bear knuckle style threw himself into a highly charged debate. Chris christy banned a controversial method claiming to cure gay children saying, according to christy it is not a sin to be gay. Abc's ryan owens has more. Reporter: This man says his deeply religious parents forced him into gay conversion therapy at the ripe old age of six. I was worried in school, wait a second, is my wrist too limp or am I walking a little too girly. I would feel terrible about it. Reporter: He's one of the young people who lined up to tell their horror stories to new jersey law makers. Stories of shock therapy. I was stocked repeatedly by people who had my parents permission to torture me. Reporter: Chris christy signed that bill, citing the american psychological association's finding that trying to turn someone from gay to straight poses serious health risk, direction, substance abuse and even suicide. New jersey becomes the second state to do so. California banned it last year. Christy, a catholic republican who may have his eye on the white house explained his views this way on cnn. I've always believed that people are born with the predisposition to be homosexual. Reporter: This type of therapy remains perfectly legal for adults. We visited a gay convention camp near houston in 2010. It was the first time cameras had been allowed inside a so called journey into manhood retreat. We met preston who said he's able to suppress his urges to be with men and claims he's happily married to a woman. It's been miraculous. This man doesn't buy it. It hurts me to see that so many other kids are still going to therapists and counselors who instill this kinds of shame on them. Reporter: All in an attempt to fix something he says was never broken. Ryan owens, abc news, los angeles.
