Transcript for Joke From Air Traffic Controller Sends Flight in Circles
We turn to two separate air scares. We reported last night about the unruly passenger and the struggle to get him under control. It was a jet blue flight from New York City to Las Vegas. They had to land in Detroit where he was taken to the hospital. Tonight, we're hearing from passengers. And there is also word of another scare. A separate flight. This one passengers didn't know about. A joke from air traffic control that September the -- sent the cockpit into action. Linzie Janis on both cases tonight, beginning with the unruly passenger. Reporter: This is the scene that frightened everyone on board that jet blue flight from New York to Las Vegas over the weekend. Yes, yes. Reporter: A passenger losing it. Yelling. Even throwing punches at flight attendants. All of a sudden, this guy who was sleeping just woke up out of nowhere and started flipping out. Everyone's freaking out. Reporter: The crew able to restrain him. The flight had to be diverted to Detroit. He was taken by police to a local hospital. It's the latest example of a different kind of turbulence in the sky. Tonight, we learned of another potentially dangerous in-flight incident that passengers never knew about. Listen as an air traffic controller tells a delta pilot he can't land in Atlanta. 630 go around. Reporter: Go around. Meaning circle the airport. They are two words that should never be joked about. That's exactly what happened. Last week. Seconds later, the controller saying this. I'm kidding, delta 630. Reporter: But the pilot already called off the landing. You sent out around. Delta 630's on the go. I have not heard of a situation like this. The control room was trying to make a little joke. You cannot do that. I don't think it was a major hazard this time. There could have easily been a traffic conflict. Reporter: The FAA said it doesn't believe anyone was put in danger. It is investigating this recent incident. In a statement to ABC news, the national air traffic controller's association says the incident never should have happened. The behavior is inappropriate and unacceptable. He's since apologized to the airline and to his colleagues. No laughing matter. Who jokes with the cockpit? Thank you, Linzie.
