is right for you. Finally tonight, there's a hospital in America where the healing person you meet may not be a doctor or a nurse but a welcoming stranger. Making connection with every patient and their family. A shining beacon of what is possible in so many lives. ABC's David Muir and the man who is America strong. How are you doing. Keep your head high. Reporter: About 1300 hugs a day where they're needed. Everyone one walking in in the middle of a fight. 14 years, David. Your still smiling. He knows their names, their cancer, their family. You can sense. I can sense. When they're giving up hope. I can sense but you know what, I have seen different cases turn around. I'm going to love you and spoil you back to health whether you want it or not. Reporter: It was a gift spotted in a little boy with that hint of a smile. Your grandmother told you you had a gift. I didn't understand what she meant by that she said I see this in you. Reporter: David was diagnosed with lung cancer a little more than a year ago. Do you remember the first time you met nick? Actually I do. He must have read something on my face like fear and said you're going to be okay. Reporter: One year later the scans were clear. Were you a big hugger in the beginning? No. I have seen the patients. Reporter: The patients here hoping they can stay at the front desk. This day they make it and nick has heard the news about David. I'm proud of you. I love you brother. I love you, too. He admitted to me he wasn't much of a hugger in the beginning. But you changed that. Yeah. Reporter: It's not just him. The letters from so many patients, I was weary of tests, scared of the cancer that had taken over my life and then I met you. His true affection for those is like getting a double dose of adrenalin to fight to face each round of chemo. Without nick could you do it? I couldn't. You know nick, too? He's like the mayor. Reporter: Maria is a researcher. Our nick. Our nick. Reporter: Through those glass doors tonight he's cleaning up his desk and preparing for 1,300 more hugs tomorrow. David Muir, ABC news, New York. And he is America strong. We thank you for watching.
