Now to American football star, all-american football star likely to become the first openly gay player in the NFL -- Michael Sam. It's announcement certainly to shake up the league. What it means for the game. Thanks to our friends at ESPN's "Outside the lines." Chris Connelly brings us the first TV interview with Sam about this historic move. Reporter: Historic words from Michael Sam -- I came to tell the world that I'm an openly, proud gay man. Reporter: -- As this 24-year-old all-american football star from the university of Missouri shared his personal story with the world. Why is now the right time for you to be telling the world this news? No one else should tell my story but me. Reporter: A defensive standout who led the southeastern conference in sacks. He'll enter the NFL draft this may, projected by some experts to go as high as the third round. What is your message for the teams that might draft you? That they see not just a gay athlete, but they can see an athlete who knows how to play the game. Reporter: Messages of support and approval flooded social media along with a number of negative comments. And there was this from an ex-player -- yet when Sam came out to his coaches and his teammates at Missouri last season, he was buoyed from the support. That guy doesn't mean that, I would joke around with the guys about being gay. Reporter: By making this announcement now, he has insured that there will be no surprises for whatever team picks him. Because I know that team knows about me, knows that I'm gay, and also knows that I work hard. Reporter: He grew up in the small town of Hitchcock, Texas, and as he told me, endured a childhood filled with adversity. Seeing my older brother killed from a gunshot wound, not knowing that my oldest sister died when she was a baby. Telling the world I'm gay is nothing compared to that. Reporter: A landmark moment in American sports. Over the phone, he told his parents that he's gay. I'm the first to go to college, first to graduate college.
