And to the other major case being investigated this evening, this one in north carolina. A former college football player is dead, and the police officer who shot him is in custody. Police say the player had just been in a car crash and was looking for help. He'd gone to a woman's house. She called 911, alarmed by the man and when police officers showed up, one of them opened fire, reportedly. Here's abc's steve osunsami tonight. Reporter: Even charlotte police are saying that the young black man shot to death by one of their officers saturday may have simply been knocking on doors in this subdivision asking for help. According to police, 24-year-old jonathan farrell, a former safety for florida a&m, had just crashed his car, a half mile away. Charlotte's police chief, who is african-american, explained that it was 2:30 in the morning and farrell was banging on the door of a frightened young woman who called police. She immediately closed the door, hit her panic alarm, called 911. As the officers approached him, just to determine if, in fact, he is the individual, what's going on? He just immediately takes off and runs toward a particular officer and that officer attempted to retreat, but at the same time, fired his weapon. Reporter: What's clear is that officer randall carrick shot farrell several times. Police determined the shooting was excessive and that carrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon. They've charged him with voluntary manslaughter. On twitter, the family of the 24-year-old asked to be left alone. "Give us peace and let us get past this." Steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta.
