Transcript for Planes Involved in Close Call at Dulles Airport
meantime to another close call for air travelers. This time, outside the nation's capital this afternoon. Two planes traveling in opposite directions came too close to each other on the runway at dulles airport. The wing of one plane clipping the tail of another. The latest in a series of air scares and near misses this summer. Abc's david kerley is in washington tonight. Reporter: There it is. The damaged tail, evidence of the surprise for 68 passengers on a united come muter flight that had just landed. It was the wing of that much larger jet, headed for take off, that clipped the smaller plane. It is unacceptable. Clear day, beautiful day, this should not happen. Reporter: These ground incidents are nothing knew, including this remarkable collision at jfk. The world's biggest jet liner, an a-380 hitting and spinning like a top a much smaller come muter aircraft. It was a similar scenario, too. One plane had just landed, the other getting ready to take off. And in boston last year, two planes readying for takeoff also collided. In each of these incidents, a large and small aircraft were involved. Which would tell you that the big planes are not seeing or aware of how long their wing tips are and the airplanes that are clearing in and off the taxiway are not in as far as they might want to go. Reporter: Officials say it's too early to know who is at fault here. What is clear is that the growing number of incidents on the ground is a concern for aviation safety officials.
