Transcript for Police: Baggage Handlers Caught Stealing at the Airport
Baggage handlers caught in a huge police sting, accused of stealing jewelry, cash and electronics. ABC's Ryan Owens on the clever way they caught a thief. Reporter: What a way to start a trip. As you're boarding the plane, a baggage handler is just below you, rifling through your luggage. Airport police in New York caught this man red-handed last year thanks to a camera hidden in the plane's belly. Watch him find a wallet, even takes time to count the cash. I think it happens all the time. It might be happening a little more, now that times are rougher. Reporter: In Los Angeles, the problem has gotten so severe, police went undercover, posing as baggage handlers. Wednesday night, officers arrested six of the real ones, hauling them right out of L.A.X. In handcuffs. We believe that there has been a culture, maybe, of being able to take property that wasn't theirs. Reporter: Police say they found passengers' electronics, jewelry, even their clothes. Even if people got arrested, I would still take all my stuff in my carry-on. Reporter: Because checking your luggage could cost a whole lot more than that $25 bag fee. Ryan Owens, ABC news, los Angeles.
