Breaking news from Alaska it is a powerful earthquake measuring eight point zero it erupted off the coast triggering a tsunami warning. Right now evacuations are underway on the islands off the mainland and ABC's David Wright is here to tell us the latest at this moment David. Good evening Diane this was a significant earthquake is struck. Just before 1 o'clock this afternoon Alaska time. When an uninhabited island all the way out at the very tip of the Aleutian Islands that's that long finger that stretches out into the Bering Sea towards Russia. -- ABC news spoke with the city manager of a deck Alaska population 300 or so is just a few miles away from the epicenter. Please -- they have to be big earthquake that -- long lasting. But they're very large building moving around everybody upon speculation -- just about a 140. People we are starting experience that we don't know how high the waves will actually be. You know we tend to think of California as earthquake country but Alaska is even more -- likely acted. Half of the quakes that occur in North America every year happen in Alaska in fact the largest quake ever recorded in North America happened there. That's a nine point two quake that occurred in march of 1964. Well as for today's eight point oh earthquake there was an initial tsunami warning but it has now been lifted Diane.
