Transcript for 'Shark Week' Kicks Off With a Deep Sea Swim
Finally tonight here, discovery shark week is back and tonight meteorologist ginger zee diving into the ocean. She's right there and she is swimming with the sharks. Reporter: Ripping at a baited chain, almost 40 sharks in a feeding frenzy just yards below me. Oh, now they're over it. They're all over it. Reporter: No cage, no chainmail suit. They're so big and I'm so close. Is it okay if I'm this close? Reporter: It is okay because I am with Stuart cove, a 30-year shark vet, a native bahamian and a shark lover out to prove -- sharks definitely are predators. But we are not their preferred prey. Sharks aren't indiscriminate killers. They just want too eat what they're supposed to eat which is fish. Reporter: The odds of being attacked by a shark are only 1 in 11.5 million. Still jumping in with dozens of them? A wet suit, flippers and a mask and I was in. They're coming very close to Stuart. Holy cow! Reporter: Watch as the bait goes in the water. The shark has got the chain in its mouth. It's incredible. Reporter: Then that 3000-some pound beast of the deep turning tender. What's he doing? Coming in for a cuddle. Reporter: While I wasn't quite ready for a bully rub, I did get in a few pets, a magical and humbling experience. Oh, my god, wild. Half of the species are endangered. That's incredible. Why didn't they go after you? Because we were wearing wet suits, flippers, anything that made us not to look like the fish they P want to eat. I'm happy to hear that. Great to have you back.
