Transcript for Behind the Suspect Who Allegedly Targeted Drivers on Kansas City Highways
Thank you, and safe trip home. Back here to breaking news about terror in the heartland, around Kansas City. Police got their suspect with help from ordinary neighbors. Reporter: This is the man police say was at the center of a terrifying string of highway shootings, 27-year-old Mohammed Whitaker. This has impacted all of us. Something that's been at the heart and thoughts of all of us. Reporter: Whitaker's home, where he was arrested. Just one block from the highway where cars were targeted. Just five miles from where several of the shootings took place. 20 cars fired on in 30 days. Tom Mcfarlin, one of the first victims. When you walked out of the car and you saw that hole, what did you think? I was like, "Is that a bullet hole?" That was my first thought. Is that what I think it is? Reporter: More than 100 tips poured in. One of them from a woman who was suspicious when she saw Whitaker wearing a hoodie and a mask in 70-degree weather. She recorded his license plate. Another man found a bag of bullets. Cops locating Whitaker's fingerprints on the bag. Police say Whitaker first claimed to have little knowledge of the shootings, but they say he then changed his story, claiming he was actually one of the highway shootings' victims. When he was taken into custody, you must have felt relieved. Very relieved, and better about driving into work. Reporter: Still no word on any possible motive. Thank you. And now, a headline, the 7.2 earthquake near acapulco, Mexico.
