Diana Alvear is a Los Angeles-based correspondent for ABC NewsOne, the network's affiliate news service. NewsOne provides live and packaged news reports for 200 ABC affiliates around the country, as well as more than 30 domestic and international clients, including BBC, NHK, ARD/Germany and CTV Canada. In addition, she files reports for the weekend editions of "Good Morning America" and "World News", as well for as the "World News" webcast. Since joining ABC News in April 2008, Alvear has reported live from the scene of the some of the biggest stories in recent years, from Japan to Chile to England. She was live on the air at the mine in Copiapo, Chile at the moment the first miner was pulled to safety, translating what the rescue workers were chanting throughout the process. She reported on the wedding of Prince William and Princess Catherine, both the days leading up to the big event and the wedding itself, providing an insider's view of what it takes to put on the wedding of the century. And she was on the ground in Japan for some of the nation's worst aftershocks in the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and resulting nuclear disaster. Alvear has also become a red carpet veteran, providing live coverage at the last two Academy Awards as well as several finales for Dancing with the Stars. While based in Chicago, Alvear reported from Florida and Texas during Tropical Storms Edouard and Fay and in the Midwest during several major blizzards. She provided live coverage throughout the 2008 presidential election, reporting from St. Paul the night then-Senator Barack Obama clinched the Democratic primaries, from Denver throughout the Democratic National Convention, and from Chicago's Grant Park on election night. Before her assignment at NewsOne, Alvear worked at WGBA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She joined the station in June 2005 and worked in a variety of roles there, including anchor of the station's morning news programs. She also served as a weekend anchor and a general assignment reporter. While at WGBA, she reported extensively from New Orleans, rural Louisiana and Mississippi on post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. She also covered the murder trial of Steven Avery, a man released from prison after serving 18 years on a wrongful conviction, only to be charged and convicted with murdering a freelance photographer shortly after his release. From July 2004 to June 2005, Alvear was a correspondent at WQOW-TV, the ABC affiliate in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she shot, wrote and edited all of her own stories for the evening newscasts. She also served as the station's chief political reporter, covering the 2004 presidential election. A graduate of the University of Florida, Alvear studied political science. She was awarded an Eleanor Merrill Fellowship to study at the University of Maryland, earning a master's degree in broadcast journalism. She is fluent in Spanish and proficient in French, and a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. An animal lover, she volunteers with local pet shelters as a foster mom.
