Steven Portnoy is a Washington-based correspondent for ABC News Radio, covering national politics, advances in science and technology and breaking news stories. He also contributes to "World News NOW," ABCNEWS.com and ABC NewsOne, the network's television affiliate feed service. Portnoy has reported from every major dateline in Washington - the White House, the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon - and traveled to nearly 30 states and several countries for ABC News. In 2012, Portnoy is one of ABC News Radio's lead reporters on the campaign trail, covering "Your Voice, Your Vote" from several states. In addition to specializing in political coverage, Portnoy has spent much of his career reporting on natural disasters at home and abroad, including the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Isabel, Ernesto and Dean. He traveled to Joplin, Missouri in the aftermath of the deadly tornado that destroyed much of the town in May 2011. Also in 2011, Portnoy reported from Madison, Wisconsin on that state's battle over public employee unions, the Kennedy Space Center for coverage of President Obama's meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and from his desk in Washington he anchored the network's radio coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden. Portnoy traveled extensively through the U.S. covering the 2008 presidential election, and he spent a week reporting from Virginia Tech in the wake of the deadly shootings in 2007, taking part in coverage that earned ABC News a national Edward R. Murrow Award. He first joined ABC News in 2002 as an intern for the White House Unit of "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings." He then spent three years covering local news in Washington at the network's owned radio station, WMAL-AM. In 2006 he became an ABC News Radio correspondent. In 2008, Portnoy was named a Peter Jennings Fellow by the National Constitution Center. He was honored with the Bayliss Horizon Award by the John Bayliss Broadcast Foundation in 2005, and took first place in the radio competition at the Hearst Broadcast News Championships in 2001. Portnoy began his career as a reporter for WSYR-AM in Syracuse while he was a student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. During that time, he also produced television newscasts at WIXT-TV (now WSYR-TV) and WSTM-TV.
