Friendless and Nearly Broke, Terrell Owens Says ‘I’m in Hell’

ht terrell owens gq mag jp 120120 wblog Friendless and Nearly Broke, Terrell Owens Says Im in Hell

(Peter Yang /GQ)

Terrell Owens, the former NFL star receiver who has signed to play for and co-own an indoor football team, is friendless and nearly broke, he told GQ magazine. “I’m in hell,” Owens, 38, said he tells people who ask about his well-being.

After the Cincinnati Bengals did not renew his one-year, $2 million contract last year, Owens has been suffering from his financial shortcomings, including ventures gone bad and child support for his four children, he said.

The $80 million or so he had made in his career is almost gone, he said, but not because he lived a lavish lifestyle.

In a profile story in GQ’s February issue, Owens said his financial advisers lured him into risky investments such as an Alabama entertainment complex that cost him $2 million. He later learned the venture was illegal in the state and violated the NFL’s policy of prohibiting players from investing in gambling, he said.

He also owns a slew of properties that he thought he would be able to rent before the housing market tanked, he said. He has a home in Los Angeles that cost him $499,000 and a multimillion-dollar home that is for sale in Atlanta. The home in New Jersey for which he paid $3.9 million was sold in late 2010 for $1.7 million, he said.

Owens also pays $44,600 a month in child support for his four children, ages 5 to 12. Three of the four mothers have sued him.

The football player laments about losing trust in people and friends. When people text and ask where he is, he answers, “I’m in hell.”

“I don’t have no friends,” he told GQ. ”I don’t want no friends. That’s how I feel.”

You mean to tell me that the T.O. Show didn’t make him millions?? lol

Posted by: Just Lindsey | January 20, 2012, 2:19 pm 2:19 pm

How does someone burn thru $80 million dollars that quickly and have absolutely nothing to show for it? I can’t even fathom that kind of income. I have to agree with the others, I don’t feel badly for him. I don’t recall him acting humble when he had the cash.

Let’s see a $499,000 home in LA; a multimillion dollar home in Atlanta; and a $3.9 million home in NJ…and he doesn’t think that’s lavish???? Keep your zipper zipped and you won’t have to worry about paying a ridiculous amount of child support to multiple women. Grow up and take responsibility for the situation you’re in…stupid is as stupid does.

LOL BOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO cry me a river.

Posted by: clownsscareme | January 20, 2012, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

$40,000 a year is absurd for child support – $40,000 per month is absurd.

That’s a broken system. However, his belief that he doesn’t have a lavish lifestyle is wrong -those multiple mansions are symptomatic of someone living a lavish lifestyle.

It would have been better to take your money and place it in a bank. The temptation to get into businesses – when you know nothing about them, should be avoided. He didn’t even know the business was illegal in the state and that the NFL prohibited the investment?

Well – besides the NFL and the law telling you not to do it, what more warning could have been given? Someone walking behind you and slapping you around?

Come on. Plus don’t have 4 children with 4 different women. I won’t defend the system, the system is absurd, but you probably knew about the system after the first child….again, get a grip dude.

Typical of so many athletes. They think the money is infinite. It’s not, it’s finite. He paid over 4 million on homes (not to mention what it cost to decorate and maintain them) and he didn’t live a lavish lifestyle?! He made 80 million, I would have put about 3/4 of that in retirement funds. He would be living large and smoking big fat blunts. Now there are 4 fatherless babies to add to the mix. Yeah stud muffin. Running around knocking up chicks is the big life isn’t it?

Imagine Steve Jobs who started with almost nothing to build a billion dollar empire from a garage. He owned a modest home with no furniture, and passed away leaving behind enormous wealth. What is the difference between Jobs and people like T.O.? Money represents different things in people’s minds; it shows in their behavior and lifestyle.

We ALL make mistakes (to you mud-slingers) and you are no different from the rest of us. People do love you. Don’t shut everyone out. And seek help for your depression. Clarity will help you see clearer and guide you in the future. Best of luck, T.O. My prayers, and I’m sure MANY others, are with you. God bless you!

$80 million, and he tried to invest it ?– to make more? He could have put that amount in a bank’s passbook savings account and lived lavishly off of the modest interest.

Being a fitness fanatic and amateur bodybuilder I always admired this guys gym regime. I can only be so sympathetic regarding his loss of money but I do believe he still has many options open to him. Its also my opinion that the various leagues should have a roster of trusted professionals i.e lawyers, accountants etc, of which these guys (and girls) can make use of should they want.

This is why education would be so important for everyone. Ever since I can remember, I manage my own assets. Sure I received quite a few invitations from those so-called “financial advisers” who would send me letters with complimentary restaurant treat – but I never take any bite. Mr. Terrell Owens on the other hand, “pays $44,600 a month – i.e. $535,200 a year in child support for his four children” – say what? More than half a mill each year to provide child support for 4 kids – way way too much. So he used to have $80 million and now almost all of it is gone – sad and tragic. Well, he should go back to school and First thing he should learn is Accounting and Finance otherwise the history will only repeat itself.

TO,

After reading the comments on this post I can see why you don’t have any friends. Not one person have said anything that will help ease or see the person of who you are as Terrel Owens. We are not you therefore we can only comment or speculate your experience from our own judgment. It may be true that you have possiby been misguided financially by unscrupolus investor. However, as you age in life you begin to look back and say to yourself what have I done. Quite frankly you have done nothing more than what everyone in this forum have done and that is living your life. I cant say where I would be or have done if I had 80 million dollars neither can anyone else. But we do know that money is the root of all evil. People have judge you that you are incompentent because you may not have the money anymore to afford child support. But they don’t realize that you LOVE your kids and that alone doesn’t have a price tag. Take my advice and don’t ridicule yourself saying you are in hell. Be positive and move forward to a more happier life for yourself and your kids.

Actually I do feel sorry for him. At least he tried to invest and extend his wealth. It’s just unfortunate that his investments didn’t work out. I mean, when you have that kind of money, who can you really trust that well to handle your money? His personality will make it hard for him to work for others but he still has his name. He wrote a Fitness book. Why not stay along those lines? Start a football camp or clinics. Endorse quality fitness equipment and diets. He still has options open to him. I hate to hear about anyone being broke.

I’m not surprised to see some hateful comments. I bet some of these people here hate the poor and people on welfare. Some of those people on welfare use to be a TO. They had money, yet trusted the wrong people. It can happen to you, too. Get over yourselves and stop acting so sanctified.

T.O is not the first to loose millions from bad investment and definitely won’t be the last. Just ask the millions of homeowners who bought into the American dream of home ownership as a means of wealth building. Thousands of people invested their money to purchase a home with the hopes of being able sell it at a profit. But due to the housing market crash, they lost most of the equity and in some cases their homes. The only difference between T.O and them is that T.O earned far more money than the average person. Therefor it allowed him to purchase more expensive homes.

As far as the business ventures. He should have done his own diligence, so that could know whether those (snakes, parasites) sorry advisers were trust worthy and had as much to loose in these ventures as he did. Does someone have to have previous experience in an certain type of business in order to invest or start one? I would hope not. I agree, without previous experience in a certain business or industry, the learning curve may be longer, but so what. With time comes knowledge and experience . If not for courageous entrepreneurs and business people, many wold not have jobs. We all have a choice. Create your own wealth and be the master of your own destiny, or work for someone else your whole life, until they have sucked everything out of you (energy, strength, creativity, drive, and ambition).

In regards to friends or lack there of. Sometime it is a blessing if certain people are removed out of your life. What is important is that know he knows who is genuine.

T.O know has wisdom and still has a promising, future if he takes heed of these life lessons. All he has to do is reach deep down inside and gather all his strength and move forward. The firm would negotiate a much better child support plan, put him on a set salary per month and start to reorganize his business affairs. This guy probably had the gov’t. take 50% right off the top. HE didn’t choose to make that bad investment on his own..his financial “advisors” did. He was taken and should have recourse against them
He also needs to go back to court and ask for reduced child support, due to change of circumstances. If his income is reduced, so should the child support.
He is at fault for not putting the proceeds from home sales into a plain vailla money market account.

Gee, 4 kids with 4 different women, and none of them his wife. And we wonder why this country is going to heck in a handbasket. This guy is a “hero”, a “role model”…someone who is glorified and practically worshipped by “pop culture” in America. For what? Because he ran around and caught a few balls? Our society is truly sick. And a guy like this…who had it all….wasted it all….knocked up a bunch of women and now says he’s in “hell”. Wow. Our country really is in trouble. Idol worship and decadence is at an all-time high, despite the tough economy.

TO sounds like he is being open and honest and perhaps in this day and age that is a crime.”

Rob…

It is painfully obvious that you have ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of what kind of a person T.O. really is! Thank your God that you’ve never had anything to do with him!!

People are going to nearly always be unkind to people that bring about problems to themselves, especially in the case of a squandered fortune. It’s just so easy to call a cab, to put on a condom or, to invest large amounts of money into your future, if you have it. He certainly did. He could have locked many millions away in such a fashion as he could have never been able to touch it that would have paid him several thousands of dollars a month for life and still had plenty of money to spend on himself and others through out his career. Had this guy locked away 25 million dollars, he could have collected $100,000 a month in interest alone the rest of his life.

Before we judge TO too harshly, remember that most of us are “never was”‘s and most of us have our own laziness, ignorance, and personal sloth to blame. It’s easy to hate people when you hate yourself. Reflect on your own life and be better people.

It’s always someone else’s fault with this guy. Pardon me if I don’t cry while his “act” comes to its logical conclusion. You can bet that at least one person told him that his posse was taking a page from his book and looking out for only themselves. But TO always knows better, right? Sure.

It’s been said … “Money doesn’t change what you are; it simply makes you more of what you are.”

The legendary Kareem Abdul Jabbar played his last two years in the NBA because HE NEEDED THE MONEY! He blew his entire $40 million fortune on lousy investments.

OJ Simpson socked a good portion of his NFL earnings away in an un-attachable pension plan and he now receives $25 thousand per month while he sits in prison.

And now we are supposed to feel sorry for TO? Not in this lifetime.

It’s a sad reality TO, but you are not the first to go broke. Millions of regular working citizens are broke, yet do not have a reality show, or other investments/endorsments. You need to go back to school and learn about finances so you may turn your frown upside down! Or, with a body like that, you can hit the pole and shake a lil something!

I agree that Every human being on this planet makes mistakes and T.O is no exception however, as an African American male who has had to work your everyday 9 to 5 for most of my life….I can’t feel sorry for pro athletes who squander away millions of dollars!!! When will these guys ever wake up? Any pro athlete out there she realize and understand on thing about ALL thats’s right ALL women…….Any woman who approaches you should be considered a potential GOLDDIGGER and before you go sticking your Johnson inside of a female your first thought should be, she’s probably after your MONEY and a GOLDIGGER!!!! Don’t these guys understand that women will get pregnant on purpose to get paid? Don’t they understand that women will intentionally NOT take the pill just so they can target Pro Athletes? Not to mention Aids, and all the other various diseases that are out there? Wake up brothers, women want one thing from you…….YOUR MONEY!!!!! PERIOD!!!!! Quit being stupid!! Believe me when I tell you, you will Pay in more ways than one!!!

Now heres how to fix it…….find a women who has her OWN money, CAR, House, and can buy her own Gucci, Donna Karan etc you only buy it for her if YOU wish to do it Not because she feels a sense of entitlement because your a rich professional athlete!!!!…Think about it before you stick it????

It doesnt matter if its a million dollar mansion or a two hundred thousand bungalo, real estate is stale and with the decline many properties are worth pennies on the dollar. That doesnt make him a bad man, it makes him one of us. As for the child support, he just needs to go back into court. In most states, child support is set by the judge according to income. When income declines dramatically, so does the child support and the ex’s are going to have to stop living off the chidren. Just my opinion.

Sounds like he’s finally got what he wants – no friends (assuming the meaning of his double negative) – shouldn’t cost $80M to get no friends though… The houses were cheap compared to child support – if the kids are 5,7,10,12 at $44.6K/month, that adds up to $18.2M, but if 3 of 4 are suing him, that means he hasn’t paid it all – coulda bought a lotta hookers with no strings for that kinda cash….

$80 mil is what he made. $40 mil is what he probably paid in federal, state and local taxes…maybe more. Because I live there, I know what Jersey taxes are like. One thing that I do know about TO is that he took care of his family. That was one of his whines in contract talks….he had to make more to take care of his family and he did. He got the screws set to him on child support not doubt. Hey, he is human and we all make mistakes ad he made a lot of them. Does he deserves to be broke and friendless. I don’t care how many mistakes that a person makes, now one deserves to be broke and friendless. Will TO learn that that the reason he is broke and friendless is from his past actions and change his ways so you can have a few friends…For his sake I hope so but God only knows.

I very rarely flame anyone. That said, when it comes to T.O., he’s a loser. But his situation can be improved.

Solid advice appears throughout these comments. Get out of the cycle of feeling sorry for yourself, TO. Whatever happened in the past is just that; in the past. So, you screwed up. So you like how you look. Nobody is God’s gift to humankind. Start building a stairway to the top of your well instead of slowly letting the underworld pull you down.

Friendless, poor, barely scraping by? You created the mess and only you can get yourself out of it. Show the world you’ve got the stones to make something good out of your life.

I can’t believe how everyone is putting this guy down…… Ok he’s made some horrible invensments and mistakes but he’s still a human being Who God brought into this world. He has a chance again to start over and try his best to make his life a little better. No onee has the right to JUDGE PEOPLE!!! Jehovah God is the ONLY TRUE JUDGE. I feel strongly that if T.O. would go to God with his whole heart, soul and mind and ask him to guide and lead his life right now I know he will get some comfort knwing that God will never put him down, leave him when he’s at rock bottom or forsake him. My prayers are with you T.O. God Bless!

All of you critics are forgetting that, no matter how accomplished any of you are, you are still ‘as filthy rags’ before the Almighty, Holy God. Have sympathy in your heart for this man. What are his mistakes compared to your own? Not as big a difference as you might think, if you look at it the way God does. I tell you, if T.O. finds Jesus Christ, he may lose the whole world but will save his soul. What is money, what is wealth, if a man’s soul is lost for eternity? I hope all you readers and T.O. find this life-changing, soul-saving Truth.

Don’t feel sorry for ya buddy. Go get snipped so you can have your fun and produce no expensive off spring.

By my measure you had 800 years of comfortable living in the bank. The average American tax payer might get by on that for 1500 years…

The child support is crazy but he should of been more responsible about being careful. I do believe him that he has had bad luck with his financial advisers. They could of caused him to lose a lot of money. I have seen it before with lots of people with money that have bad people making lots of money off getting them into bad investments. The problem I have with financial advisers is that no matter what happens, whether you are losing money or making money, they still make money. They have no skin in the game.

You know….I do have empathy for T.O.’s down & out internal angst. However, I think actors/actresses, singers, & atheletes get paid overtly too much. It is glutty how much money goes to the least because…why? People worship those whom they think are better than themselves. Money symbolizes our faith & value in someone when we put them on a pedestal & idolize them. They are not as important nor special. This is where equality gets misconstured & self imagine. So…, can run fast, throw a pig skin across a hundred yard field, sing the highest, the longest, the prettiest, & act like they have multiple personalities!? Come on, these few with soooo much $ & you T.O. as a prime example, blow $80 mil. & there are people who work their asses off & their lives away providing an honest income jjust to keep their heads above water for heir family & self. There are people who teach, heal & give so much of their knowledge, talent, time & energy and what is it worth!? That $80 mil. could of gone into investing in others like starting an organization or charity. Let your currency be self love & respect, passion for who you are & love for others…..Without love you are bankrupt. no matter how many items you can buy or own or, how much money you earn. It means nothing. And you have nothing. Love to you T. O.

These overpaid (absurdly overpaid) self indulgent morons make hundreds of millions and squander all those millions on nothing of value, and yes folks, in the big picture, sports on that level are nothing important. Hard as people try they can’t make a pro sport anything more than what it is – a waste of money and too much attention devoted to some sick pukes. If anything these millionaire jerks and their “fans” have made the game far less important than it ever was. It used to be a game, now it’s all about money. Very shallow people getting way too much money for doing nothing of value. Too bad for the game and anyone who thinks it’s worth more than the scam these idiots have made. Save your money and force these jerks to get a job that means something .

To those who say “don’t judge”: tell the guy, whoever he is, to not come online and cry if he doesn’t want to be judged. He’s voluntarily putting this out here.

His financial advisers didn’t impregnate the 4 women. Too bad he didn’t use some of that $80 mil to buy some self-control.

Shoulda asked for financial advice from one of the 4 gold-diggers, they seem to be a lot more savvy about money than he is.

As long as these supposed “institutions of higher learning” (eyeroll) put sports over education and rubber-stamp these guys through college (most of whom should never have been allowed to graduate junior high, never mind high school), we will continue to see these stories.

such a shame for these bad things happening to someone that has always been a friendly, down-to-earth, humble, and self-effacing kind of guy… #/hurl

I was going to say something ugly like most of the rest of you, but then I read Carol’s (and many other similar) post. Good Luck Terrell!

You athletes gone broke and sport celebrities, celebrities in general gone broke ZERO SYMPATHY from this reader. You idiots should have taken at least a million of that when you first got it and stuck it in a bank account and collected interest on it for all the playing years, acting years, etc. Dumb and Dumber!

@ NORMAN ~ January 21, 2012, 5:48 am 5:48 am : “But they don’t realize that you LOVE your kids ”

NORMAN… I’ve got at least 15 years of experience with T.O. and his antics and his ups and downs, his lies and his B.S., and I am DEAD CERTAIN that T.O. DOES NOT LOVE ANYONE EXCEPT T.O.! 15 (PLUS) years of observing that egotist have proved that to me. And the fact that all his “So-Called” FRIENDS have ‘bailed out’ is just the ‘proof of the pudding’! No more money to buy drugs for them, take them out on the town… etc… Their ‘bail out’ must be very disappointing to him, but without all those perks, anyone with an ounce of self respect would get as far away as possible from a person who is as self-centered as T.O. is. You have to EARN FRIENDSHIP T.O. !! ~ IT CANNOT BE BOUGHT! ~ The same goes for LOYALTY, T.O. !! ~ Loyalty = “A feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection”… Two things that aren’t in T.O.’s vocabulary. Just ask his EX-Teammates!

Good Luck to ya’, T.O. ~ My guess is that you’re gonna need it!

T.O. is a true portrait of how one’s great skill, can be over-shadowed by a bad attitude & a sexually sloppy lifestyle. Don’t look for the state to finance your mismatched family. Get a job & pay for your children!

What sum of you may NOT know..T.O would throw a birthday party/Charity event every year T.O would adopt 81 (jersey #) families and would spend thousands of $ on 1 family!!! TO held free several football camps each year. He was always visible in the community. Yes he was careless but he had a big heart. Its unfortunate that he mistaken fake people for love. If I could speak to T.O I would say…we all make mistakes, but its NOT the end! Reevaluate yourself, make some self-improvement and live life to its fullest! Money doesn’t determine happiness! God loves you and so do I!!

He needs intense counseling and has been unable to overcome issues from his childhood. Some people who have dealt with those same issues were able to find a sense of peace. He’s human and I’m sure he’s learning a lesson. The fame and money act as drugs to fill the emptiness. I hope he realizes there are more possibilities than “hell.”
