Touchy subject!! I'm a naval veteran of 10 yrs I missed the Uss Cole bombing by 1 day, I was to report there the day before. sailed in many campaigns, I watched planes crash into The NY towers via satellite as a General Quarters alarm sounded ( basically man your battle stations) My brother who's an ex Marine, served in Iraq and killed people ,thought about killing himself. My father an Army veteran abused his family everyday!! I work in DC where the Happy civilian walks past a Veteran sleeping under a bridge in freezing temperatures. I've been on jobs were I watch a Veteran get treated like crap, because of a fearful civilian is afraid of losing his job because the leadership skills are putting the Veteran ahead. I stood on the flight grounds as Two of my friends were unloaded from a plane in a Box!!!! I stood duty missing my family, with my life On the line every second, so You could Roam free and be at home happy with your family. I'm just one Veteran, imagine what the rest have been through? Yes, everyone deserves a fair chance! But to complain about a Veteran receiving any type of assistance makes you a Fkd up individual.Years ago I almost killed myself, I thank God I didn't. To get pushed to the front of any line doesn't even come close to Saying Thank You!!

While this looks good on the surface, the jobs are specifically in the aviation area. These are some of the few vets whose skills can translate to civilian jobs easier. These jobs are not going to be for ground pounders whose only real skill is carrying a rifle and a pack. These are the ones getting left behind when they leave the service.

WAY.TO.GO, GE! So you were skipped over for a defender of your freedoms? These guys have put everything on the line for all of you selfish, self-absorbed, me, me, me nasty individuals so you could post the exact rubbish you just did. These Vets have lost their jobs, their health, their limbs, their homes, some their marriages and too many their lives - and you naysayers have the nerve to deny them the right to return to some normalcy in their lives? All of you can go pound sand!

"Hats off to GE. Ya dun good." Completely bogus. GE laid off to to three times that many of experience employees even through they were still in the black. Now Immelt wants both the profits from the government tax credit AND paying lower salaries than were paid to those laid off for the vets that they do hire - all the trappings of what the liberals claim to despise in a company and yet they're probably cheering GE because President Obama named do-nothing Immelt to his council and proposed this. Wnat to bet that the President and his cronies score big from the GE PAC for this?

I guess the message is still " Uncle Sam wants YOU ! " ( and he'll give you first crack at a public sector job you more than likely know zip about too , that is if join the US Military and let them brainwash you for at least 4 years / go kill and pee on people / etc. ) . I've personally never met more than 2 or 3 out of 10 ex-military who aren't so brainwashed after their service that they knew up from down . Most kids that go into the military morph into right winger gung ho John Wayne conservatives with zero to little useful intellectualism present , and that's a fact. It's the last place any thinking parent would want their child as well . Military service is fine when we need it , but we don't need it and haven't need it for years . The US political influence meddlers who Egypt is going to put on trial soon are a perfect example of how US foreign policy precipitates then need for such a large blustering military force . We need to quit our constant and impish US covert meddling in other sovereign nations' affairs ( Syria for another example ) and we'd need much much less of a military "threat" probably .

@Ranknfile: I am a retired Army veteran and have never received a discount for a car. It was not my choice to join the Army, it was the draft in 1971. I did not choose to visit the Republic of VietNam either, I was ordered there.
As for vet preferance, There are many whom deserve it. I was ordered to the reserves with 19yr 10months in active duty, thus I do not draw my retirement until age 60. That is how the military cutbacks were done to many who were just short of retirement time. The hope was that you gave up and opted out or died before age 60. 4 more months baby and I will get my medical disability and retirement, until then I work for a draft-dodger boss who went to Canada until he was forgiven.
Thank you to GE.

To those of you who are saying a veteran did not earn his/her place to be first in line for a job and it is discriminatory because maybe he/she did not come near a combat zone or just because he/she is a veteran, well, the moment you sign on the dotted line, you are eligible to be placed in a combat zone. So, I urge everyone of you ungrateful, it's all about "me" complainers, go sign on the dotted line and take your butt to the frontline. I'll buy you a one-way ticket! I'm a civilian and I thank each and every one of our veterans - past, current and future - for everything they and their families have sacrified. Many have given their all and came home in a box. What have YOU done for your country and fellow citizens except complain? I thought so.

I'm not a vet so I may have a different view than some.
This is blatant descriminatory hiring practice.
And the veterans earned it.
Hats off to GE. Ya dun good.

We need the draft to be reinstated . Everyone serves , no exceptions . No sign up for pay , you either go to college and get an education or you get drafted and that is that just like it used to be . That would stop a lot of conservatives' warmongering too . Now they know their kids won't have to go get blown up because there is already a preponderance of low income grunt cannon fodder .
