My company has been doing this for about 4 years now as a way to provide more work/life balance and attract top talent. It’s been very successful all around. Sure, there are some folks that take advantage but those folks end up weeded themselves right out the door because they end up not being productive.

Overall, we Americans work too hard and too much. I don’t see anything wrong with providing employees with this option if it’s done right.

What wasn’t addressed was the psychological need for managers to “control” their employees. Pretty hard to do when they are not in the office, leaving the managers more dysfunctional than when they are in the office. We may find them in their offices in the fetal position sucking their thumbs.

As someone who owns his own catering company and was just updating my menu while sipping a Knob Creek, let me just say that working at home is VERY(hic) productive!

I’m sure that employee productivity metrics would also have to back the self-reporting. I can say for certain that I am more productive since working-from-home. In fact, I’ve actually had to police myself in order NOT to work too much. One thing that MM1970 mentions and with which I concur is that I don’t have the social interruptions at home that accompany an office environment. Do I get to throw in a load of laundry whenever I want? Yes, but I also find myself going to the computer to work when there’s not much else to do at home, for the moment.

I find that I am more productive at home, at least 50% more (this is when my child is not at home – that’s different!) When you are at the office, you are subject to many interruptions, some useful, some not.

At home you have the ability to focus without all that. I often take home what I think is 5 hours of work on a Sunday and get it done in 1.5-2 hrs.

What do you think they were going to say? That they sat around doing LESS work? Duh…

Good for this company. Yet not all businesses can work at home. It makes me wonder though what percentage of businesses can work at home. I douibtful the number will be high.
