This stadium was not a "stealth" project. The voters knew what they were voting for and approved the project. It came in on time and under budget. The Allen school district does not skimp on academics, either. We are an exemplary rated school district. My son is a freshman in the high school here and he will have learning opportunities I could only dream of at his age. This stadium will serve as a real time learning lab for the journalism and visual arts students who will run the radio and tv broadcasts of games. Our primary school students have access to the latest technology to aid their learning experiences. Our high school students who are interested in the performing arts have a world class performing arts center to show their craft. There is a culinary arts program in the high school that includes a student run restaurant. There are a number of certifications students can earn while in high school that make them employable the day they graduate from school. Or alternatively, they can earn enough college credits to shave semesters off their college years. When the state cut our education funding two years ago, the voters of this community voted to raise our taxes to make up the difference. You may not approve of how we spend our money here but you cannot say that we do not take good care of our kids. Students graduating from Allen High School will have a wealth of educational, vocational and extracurricular experiences that will make them productive citizens in our community.

This stadium was not financed out of the education budget. It was built for the entertainment of the community. I don't see how it's different from cities financing a pro football stadium. It's just that the players are the kids rather than professionals.

You think that if the stadium wasn't being built, the community would have financed a 60 million dollar bond to go to the classroom? Um, no.

I think the US is #1 is spending per student and what is the result? We have all seen the "60 Minutes" stories of how difficult it is for school districts to deal with problem teachers in public schools. Add to that the amount of (what many believe) unnecessary overhead throughout most school systems, and we get a picture of why school reform is so necessary.

Yeah, lets put $60 million towards a stadium instead of towards improving the education system in Texas that is so abysmal!! makes perfect sense!! [hahahahahahaha]

POSTED BY: PKSK531 | AUGUST 25, 2012, 11:09 AM

The voters voted "Yes" on the stadium bonds. I don't know the numbers, but I'd guess that many in the Allen district know and take advantage of the benefits of private schools or home schooling.

if the locals choose to support such an extravagant item, it's their business/choice. And if it was done as a cloaked project then it is up to them to rectify it. I'm sure this thing didn't just materialize out of the blue. Looks like a multi-year undertaking that the local community should have been highly aware of with opportunity to challenge it. As far as spending more money on education, a 1998 study showed the US ranking fourth on $ spent per primary school student. And yet results don't match spending (as ranked with others).

# 1 Denmark: $6,713.00 per student
# 2 Switzerland: $6,470.00 per student
# 3 Austria: $6,065.00 per student
# 4 United States: $6,043.00 per student
# 5 Norway: $5,761.00 per student
# 6 Italy: $5,653.00 per student
# 7 Sweden: $5,579.00 per student
# 8 Japan: $5,075.00 per student
# 9 Israel: $4,135.00 per student
# 10 Australia: $3,981.00 per student
# 11 Netherlands: $3,795.00 per student
# 12 France: $3,752.00 per student
# 13 Germany: $3,531.00 per student
# 14 United Kingdom: $3,329.00 per student
# 15 Spain: $3,267.00 per student

After the way Obama through $800,000,000,000 to the wind and called it "stimulus", this looks like a great investment. At least it was "shovel ready".

FEDUP please don't try blaming teachers for this. As a teacher the thought of this kind of spending on a football stadium (stadium? really, not a field with bleachers?) is sick! Anyone who justifies this is crazy!
