First, there is a curriculum to be followed. Is this part of the curriculum? Section 37-31-101. of the Montana Code: "Definitions. Unless the context requires otherwise, in this chapter, the following definitions apply: " " (4) (a) "Electrology" means the study of and the professional practice of permanently removing superfluous hair by destroying the hair roots through passage of an electric current with an electrified needle. Electrology includes electrolysis and thermolysis. Electrology may include the use of waxes for epilation and the use of chemical depilatories." Were these students studying electrology?

Second, my former colleagues and I used to joke about opening a cosmetology or barber school when we retired. Why? They're money-making machines. Here's why: Students are required to put in a specific number of hours performing specific skills required of their license class (e.g. cosmetologist, manicurist, esthetician), after which they apply to their state licensing board to take the competency assessment examination for licensure. There is NO requirement of the school to assess whether the student has successfully completed tasks, which is absurd.

Then the student takes the test and let's say they fail, and fail, and fail. They and/or their parents become angry, because "they passed cosmetology school." Well, not really. They put in a specific number of hours, but no one said whether they were proficient or not. This is something that needs to be addressed across the nation. Cosmetology and barber schools rake in a lot of money, especially from Pell Grants and the like, with no requirement on their part to give their students a "grade," like any other school that students attend.

This is why my former colleagues and I joked about opening a cosmetology or barber school when we retired. Yes, we worked in professional licensing for many years, hence our knowledge of how this all works. The bottom line is that the cosmetology and barber profession have many influential members who would lobby against such legislation. Sad, but true.

Do these students know they won't be able to discriminate who they will and will not give bikini waxes to once they graduate?

Oh, they're trying to sue so they won't have to work.

Carry on, then
