Is a $15 gift card enough to compensate for public humiliation at your local grocery store? According to one Georgia woman, the answer is absolutely not.

Cindy Nerger, 28, who relies on food stamps to feed her family, said she was brought to tears after being embarrassed by a manager at a Kroger store in Warner Robbins, Ga.

“He said, ‘Excuse me for working for a living and not relying on food stamps like you,’” Nerger said the manager told her.

The man’s comment came after Nerger and two other store employees disagreed over whether her total purchase was eligible for food stamps — the employees had insisted that roughly $10 of her bill was not covered. She said the manager ultimately told the employees to “just give it to her.”

After Nerger then stressed that she had been right all along, the man made his “working for a living” remark, she said.

“I turned around and realized how many people heard him and how many saw that happened and I was so embarrassed… I started crying,” she said.

In a statement to ABCNews.com, a Kroger spokesman said, “We deeply regret our customer’s experience. The comments made were not reflective of our company’s policy. We value all of our customers. Please know that we have taken immediate steps to make sure something like this never happens again.”

The spokesman did not reply to a follow-up message asking for more information, but a local Georgia television station reported that Kroger had transferred the manager at the center of the controversy to another store.

Nerger said the reason she and her family — she is married with a daughter — must rely on food stamps is because her husband’s carpentry business isn’t profitable enough to support the family.

Meanwhile, Nerger must devote 12 hours every night to a dialysis treatment to combat her kidney disease, which she’s struggled with since the age of 11. She’s been on a kidney transplant list for five years and hopes that someday, after a successful transplant, she can become a working member of society. She would like to attend college to major in child psychology.

“There’s just so much stigmatism put on people on food stamps. They’re just some losers who don’t want to work. That isn’t the case in every situation,” she said.

Nerger’s account of her run-in with a Kroger manager went viral after she posted it to her Facebook page, prompting friends to encourage her to post a message to a local television station. The station ended up contacting her and doing a story.

Kroger, meanwhile, responded to a complaint Nerger passed on through the store’s national customer service line by apologizing and offering her a $15 gift card. Nerger said she rejected the offer because she doesn’t plan on shopping at Kroger again.

What she wants, she said, is an apology directly from the manager, whom she also believes should be demoted from his job and trained how to treat customers properly.

She stopped short of saying the man should lose his job.

“I didn’t want anybody to be in the food stamp line with me,” she said.

This poor woman should never have had to go through this, and Kroger’s should have fired that person for those comments. I will agree, that there are some people on foodstamps because they are too lazy to work for a living, but that is the society that this president has put us in today. And I can say this because I know of someone on food stamps that is “MILKING” the system.

Nothing like kicking someone while they’re down. Imagine insulting this women who is in kidney failure like that. What is wrong with this society. Beware of Karma, people. LIfe has a funny way to send what you send back at ya.

re:Ladys – If you know of someone MILKING the system – you should turn them in. I will agree there are people who commit fraud by obtaining something they aren’t entitiled to but there are a great many who depend on the food program to survive and feed their families – for a great number of different reasons. I’m grateful that such a thing exists in our country to help those less fortunate – even though there exists an attitude in this country that if someone is in need – it is because they are either stupid, lazy or not worth a darn. That is the real disgrace in this country. Our current president didn’t create the problem – he just has compassion and understanding as a true Christian person should.

I never make comments because in today’s enconomy we don’t know anyone’s history or circumstance. As for milking the system, there are plenty. I wish there was more oversight in the program. When I was 16 and working at a bakery, some would come in all “decked out” in gold jewelry, manicures, and expensive clothing and then proceed to pay for their ‘larger than life’ cakes in food stamps. I would cringe.

I’d be willing to bet there’s more to this story than posted. Cashiers, more than not, know better what’s an authorized food stamp purchase. Nrs. Nerger probably had unauthorized items in her basket. The manager’s comment was out of line. Additionally, Obama DID create this mess! He disobeyed the “work requirement” of Bill Clinton’s bill pertaining to receipt of public assistance. Only Romney’s election will straighten out this free for all!

Posted by: Ed | September 26, 2012, 10:26 am 10:26 am

I will bet anything that manager is a Romney/Ryan supporter. We have only begun to see how this will play out in the coming years. . . .

Posted by: Jim | September 26, 2012, 10:41 am 10:41 am

President Obama did not put food stamp recipients in this position. As a matter of fact, if the Republicans had not spouted lies about people on government assistance, this would have never happened. People are on assistance for many reasons.

Born American, I have never thought of my fellow Americans as stupid individuals, but I’m beginning to believe that we have become a society of arrogant ignoramuses, with no empathy. There are people out here that cannot find jobs, are physically ill and not able to work, full-time students trying to better their lives, and people who work but don’t make enough money. And then there are the few who do live off government assistance.

I give my support to the hardworking Store Manager and cashiers. They are the working class and taxpayers. The woman on food stamps held up a line by trying to charge items not allowed under US law. The cashiers and Store Managers are hard workers who have to get yelled at by a woman who feels entitled. Why doesn’t her husband get a second job to take care of his family? Why should the store manager have to work all day to support this woman?

Posted by: karen | September 26, 2012, 10:49 am 10:49 am

Food stamps should provide only the basic foodstuffs. Steaks and prepackaged foods should not be allowed.

I live in Georgia and I wouldn’t shop at Kroger if you paid me. They ought to be ashamed.

Posted by: Mom in Georgia | September 26, 2012, 10:52 am 10:52 am

Some of those persons showing up all decked out to pay for their items with food stamps are involved in selling drugs or are with people who sell drugs. I doubt that they will live very long and certainly not in peace.

If we chose our words justly when we open our mouths, we would not be having this issue. If there were some purchases she had that were not on the approved list, it more than likely was out of an unfamiliarity with what was right or wrong. I too with 3 kids was on food stamps for a short while during my then husbands’ back injury. It was so appreciated and I couldn’t believe we were assisted. We ate better than we had been for some time. It was a blessing. I do remember being embarrassed at using them (they were the coupon book type). Thankfully some inconsiderate soul did not say rude things to me. It would have damaged my esteem further. It was not a good time in my life when all seemed to be stacked against me. Thankfully, too, we recovered in a few months and were back on our feet contributing to the same system that helps countless others. Shame to be those who ‘milk’ the system. It is hurting the ones who truly need the help and who would otherwise not be feeding their family well. Come on folks. Lets’ find love in our hearts and live more like brothers and sisters with one another.

The manager have been fired. It’s not too late.

People commenting here with such scorn for those on food stamps should have to trade places with them for a year.

I bet they would sing a different tune then.

@ Mom in Georgia…do you realize that some people on food stamps have not always been on food stamps? Some actually lost their well-paying jobs. Some are ill, some are in school, and some may have had an interview that day. When did we become a society of judgmental people? I’m glad I missed that memo.

I have known this young lady for 20 years. None of yall know her situation nor do most of you care. She is the sweetest person and would do anything for anyone. Why cant her husband get a second job you ask…. well did you ever think she has more bad days than good and cant take care of herself or their daughter. She doesnt want the manager to get fired. A simple im sorry is all she wants. And trust me she isnt eating steak and shrimp. She did not go to the media with this, she vented on her facebook and it went viral from there. She did call Kroger as she had every right to.

Posted by: fed up | September 26, 2012, 11:26 am 11:26 am

My husband was in the supermarket business for 30 years and it’s a very stressful business from corporate to customers to employees. Maybe this guy had had a very bad day, maybe he had witnessed as my husband did too many folks abusing food stamps, WIC and other govt programs, maybe the employees had carried out groceries bought with food stamps to high dollar autos they couldn’t afford while working hard jobs, maybe they had witnessed too many folks buying better food with food stamps than they could afford…maybe greedy abusers make people in real need appear like slackers, not to mention use up borrowed, print on demand welfare dollars…there’s two sides to every story.

I sympathize for this family. Is it Bush’s fault? Is it Obama’s fault. No, it is the fault of a failing Federal Government and greedy Corporations that has been too stupid to realize that sending all of our mfg. jobs overseas is the cause. Remember, Bill Clinton ‘s admin. pushed NAFTA. Perrow was right. That great swushing sound is all of our jobs going out of the U.S. How much more stupid can the American people get? Lock and load baby, cause it’s coming to your front yard!

Dear Fed Up,

She called Kroger, well I just wrote Kroger and complained. I hope she doesn’t think that everyone feels that way.

I don’t care if the manager was having a bad day. She and no one else deserves abuse. I am completely baffled by some of the comments. Someone stated that government recipients should not be allowed to purchase steaks? Do you propose they purchase canned goods and unhealthy fats? If that’s what you intended to state then there is still going to be a problem when people on government assistance develop health problems like hypertension, diabetes, etc. Hence, increased Medicaid costs.

I do feel for the woman and her embarrassment/humiliation, however with 47% of our society being supported by our government, it is understandable that some of the 53% paying the bill resent having to work while 47% receive it as a handout.

Andd why are not these same people heckling General Motors proverbial FOOD STAMP program for their highly paid executives. Of course they packaged it as the Troubled Asset Relief Program — but by it’s right name — it would be Supplemental Secuirty Income and Food Stamps. Of course, if General Motors had been headquartered in Allllgheny County,PA the administrator’s of their program would have personallly pocketed 71.5% or 143 of every $200 dollars intended for indiviiduals who are enduring economic hardships not of theiir own making. For example. if you had less than $250 in your checking account on any given day Allllegheny County demands you receive their ‘medical assistance”; all practices, of which result in signficant harm or early death. If anyone thinks mandatory health insurance has any relationsship to competent medical care that ensures welllness it’s about time they get past their ability to supsend disbelief. And of course, the same goes for those whom are manipulated into believing that universitiy research/medical hospitals have any intention of promoting wellness. I’m beginning to think since Heatlth and Human Services is administering research that is not in te best interest of the public good — and in fact causes harm, that the United States Treasury is better served by making direct deposits into the checking accounts of tthose who are enduring economic hardship and cut out the food stamp credit card administered by Chase Morgan. It’s just unneeded overhead. And if fact, since the President and his administration has failed to balance the budget, until they eliminate this wasterful overhead, we the peoplle shoulld subject them to the same abusive scrutiny other receipients of federal funds are subjected too. That might also promulgate a proper implementation of the Reduction In Paperwork Act. I could wax on about this — but the bottom line is, you can’t run a country if you can’t read a balance sheet. There is no need for those Chase Manhattan food stamp cards — treat those receipients with dignity and deposit the money directly into their checking accounts. As for the Jenny Silll’s comment about the handout; it’s not a handout when the recipient is a victim of a federal crime perpetrated by government employees. And that incudes state employees too. I now understand why Ann Ryand’s fictional John Galt character went underground. In fact, I was handed a study to develop, where the Statement of Work was tittled “Barriers To Regulation.’ If you want to know how the real world really works, check out Mr. Smith Goes To Washington — nothing has changed. in the words of Frank Capra’s Senator Thomas Paine’ — description of Senator Jefferson Smith “He’s honest, not stupid.” The cover up in this adminsistration is the proverbial “Oops, we’re making too many mistakes.” Where i worked for living that rule-of-thumb was “get it right the 1st time.” Be thorough, be complete and follow through.’ This adminstration invades privacy by putting spy ware on personal bank accounts — and it’s going to get worse. Oddly enough, this republic is beginning too look a lot like the nation my parents referred to when I was a kid. They used to say — “clear your plate, think of all the starving children in china.” This administration s “do as I say, not as I do adminstration” whichi includes eroding the ideals codified in the constitution.

Criminy. Not paying taxes doesn’t automatically mean the government supports you. When my husband was in grad school full-time, he worked a job and I worked two. We got every penny of our withholding back when we filed with IRS for two years – hence we did not pay taxes for two years. During this time we did not receive food-stamps or housing assistance or home heating assistance. We did drive on the roads; we did pay state income taxes; we did pay state and local sales taxes; the cost per gallon of gasoline included a tax.

Isn’t the time to consider whether or not you can afford a family before you start one? Just asking!

Posted by: DPM | September 26, 2012, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

i just watched the ABC video ‘what would you do.” in the ‘real world’ direct acceptance of the money to make up the difference in the actress’ food bill — if more than twenty dolllars, would have resuted in a mischaraqcaterization by food stamp administrator’s as a source of income and they would have taken away alll of her assitance.

Also, the Social Security Administration has ‘lost’ everyones W2 records prior to 1986. Thus, all that money ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ put into the system anticipating it was ours — has been erased. So, who are all these people we paid to be accountable. Those are the people who are the real receipients of ‘handouts’ in spite of the fact their is no evidence they performed their record keeping jobs. As i said, before it was deleted, the real hoarding studies should be performed on those hoarding information — and then conveniently losing it. Undoubtedly, they do not give out their first and last names — to uphold the notion of ‘no transparency.’ The proper training for the kroger’s manager is to put him on food stamps; then he will learn empathy. This woman needs a kidney donated. isn’t their someone out their willing ot step up to the plate? That’s the real story. it is not the place of the government to decide what igrocery items are basic necessities. Two years ago, i read they wanted to cut out Coca Cola and soda pop to put all recipients on diets. The same month the American Journal of Gastorenterology ran a peer reviewed case study that showed that Coca Cola, consumed for two weeks by an elderly man, dissolved the enteirc pilll coatings (wax or shellac) that formed fecaliths (i.e., bowel obstructions) that lead to digestive disorders. This worked for me too — and i was never a Coca Cola consumer before. The sick thing about these discoveries, is the most heathful solution for many diablleing conditions that lead to finanical hardship that compells people to apply for foods stamps, are not considered ‘medicine’ under the IRS tax code because the goverment is trying ot perpetuate the myth that pharmaceuticals developed by PhD-earned intelligence and authoriaed under a prescription are equally meritorious to orgaqnic foods, pestiicide free fruit and vegetable coatings, herbs, and other increasingly effective ‘natural’ remedies. i’m of a mind to get a persciption for distilled waqter so it is tax deductable and perfume free detergents. i beelive that the Secretary of Health and Services outght to stand on a street corner where buses go by every 15 minutes — undoubtedly a ightbulb will soon be going off in someone’s head — there is no need for cancer research — the root cause is hazzardous air pollutitants that only an idiot would not know compromise immune functionalty that lead to DIS- abiiteis that create the extraoridnary public assistqance needs envelopoing what was once our countries greatest assets; clean air, land and water, nature’s beauty and good health. As for anyone who thinks we are not entitled to this — they can go camp out on the island of gabrage floating in the midatlantic. i am enttited to compenstation for bad decision behavior by academic and their government counter parts because i say so; not because someone else says so. Time to can the medical malpractice certification process — in favor of all of us who can look up best practices on the internet — or even better yet — use our own common sense..

If you know of someone “Milking” the government for food stamps, TANF, etc., you have a legal obligation to report them. You don’t have to use your name, but you do have to report them or you could wind up being an accessory to their fraud. It’s a federal offense to take money from any government assistance program if you have provided false information or don’t report changes within the alloted time frame.

The solution to poverty is simple: Don’t have sexual relations until you can afford responsibility for its ultimate consequences, don’t smoke ‘anything’, don’t drink, work hard. Too many incontinents in this world, however, they won’t be a problem after our leader consolidates power and doesn’t need their votes to rule unimpeded by pluraility in the polity. They will work or perish then, as they have in every communitarian utopia of the past. Obama 2012!….. now and forever. I have been on both sides of this issue. When my husband was laid off from work and I was working only part-time while attending college full-time we had three little children and needed to depend on food stamps to feed them. But after I graduated from college I got a full time state job taking and processing applications for food stamps, Medicaid and cash assistance. During my time working at that job I saw so many able bodied people who got all of the assistance that they could qualify for with no intention of it being “temporary” assistance, in fact, if a paying job was obtained that was going to reduce the food stamps received, the vast majority would quit the paying job just to keep the full food stamp benefits. I think we have created a large segment of society that thinks it is the government’s obligation to take care of them and all their kids. The main goal of this segment of society is to be declared disabled so that they collect SSI (government disability payment) for the rest of their lives. I don’t know the lady in this story and I do not pass any judgment on her or her family, but recipients of public assistance need to be aware that the general public is fed up with those who can work but choose not to and therefore they should not be surprised when incidents/comments like this one happen.

Posted by: Betty | September 27, 2012, 10:03 am 10:03 am

Betty, I could kiss you. You have given the definitive definition of what is wrong with our government’s food stamp program and most other of our government “help” programs.

Posted by: Earl | September 27, 2012, 10:18 am 10:18 am

How people can be so hateful and judgmental? My husband hurt his back and got fired for it. We were not able to collect disability. He suffered and went through therapy and is now working again at a job that pays ½ of what he was making. I am a mother of three kids, my husband works and I work two jobs and we still can’t make ends meet. If it were not for food stamps we would not be able to feed our family, and by the end of the month my cupboards are bare. WHY are there people judging and condemning the food stamp program that feed CHILREBN? The problem isn’t the working poor it’s the blood suckers that work fro the government that collect big paychecks that we all pay for. Why should they make over $150,000 a year for life?

Same thing pretty much happened to my girlfriend, while at a Stop and Shop Supermarket In Dayville, CT. Here is what she wrote. “So, the manager at Stop and Shop was too busy having a discussion w/ a customer about how everyone on foodstamps is a lazy bum and should work more jobs to come and help the cashier w/my checkout (there was a prob w/the magnetic strip on my foodstamp card). I think some other grocery store will get my business from now on. I’m not lazy and I’m not a bum. And while that Stop and Shop manager is most def entitled to her opinion. That was not the time or place for her to be voicing it.” She is in school to be a Nurse, and she also has a part time job, and also takes care of her two daughters which takes up most of her time, this is only temporary for her until she finishes school, she is 32 and this is the first time she has ever needed any type of assistance.

I notice that in all these comments, I don’t really see any comments disputing the truth of what the manager said. Yes, she has kidney disease which puts her at a disadvantage and yes she decided to have a child — another mouth to feed — despite not even being able to pay for herself. There’s no selfishness in that? She should be embarrassed that her entire existence is paid for by the taxpayers, including the poor manager who reassigned for pointing out what everyone else present was thinking. She certainly seems capable of making quite a fuss over this non-incident — what exactly is keeping her from using that energy for gainful employment?

Posted by: Kevin | October 4, 2012, 12:06 pm 12:06 pm

I am so tired of people and their negative comments on people who are on food stamps. Like a commenter stated, it is none of any body business on how they choose to live their life. If I buy a cake with food stamp, that is my business. I have lived for 38 years and I have never experienced how people are so cruel to one another and make excuses for it. The person who said someone came in with flasy clothes how do you know if they did not get that from a clothing bank. Mind your business. Do you know that if it were not for the grace of God(if you believe in him) you could be in the same situation or worse? It is wrong to mock the poor. The bible said to mock the poor is to make fun of his maker. You are blessed when you help the poor because it gives them hope. You are not helping by making negative comments or try to bring shame.

Because working to get things you need for you family is such a bad thing. She deserved to be upset. It’s insanely easy to find at least a mediocre job, like working at kroger, to help pay for things. People are too damn sensitive today, odds are if it’s a sore spot, it’s true.
