With current 30 yr mortgage interest rates, that $5000 will cost $178/yr in interest the first year. The federal PVWATTS calculator shows us that $5000 1KW panel will only annually generate power worth $143 in sunny Austin TX, $62 in rainy Seattle and $95 in snowy Detroit. And only $183 in high electric cost Los Angeles. Except in LA, not enough to even pay the interest, much less pay for the system. And IN LA, with a tiny $5/year positive cash flow, not enough to even make a dent in the $5000 loan over the 25 year life of the panels. This is the REAL economics of solar, when money stolen from others is removed from the equation. Residential solar is currently running about $5,000 per KW installed.
