Mark Skiba, an alum of Auburn University, placed a $100 bet last January that his Tigers would win the national championship in 2014. If Auburn does defeat the Florida State Seminoles tonight in the championship game, the bet will pay Skiba $50,000.

The Vizio Bowl Championship Series will air at 8:30 pm EST on ESPN. Auburn, ranked No. 2 in the nation, is considered an underdog to undefeated Florida.

Though the face-off is only hours away, the Auburn Tigers' 12-1 season is still unbelievable to some fans. But Skiba believed in the beginning. Last January, when Skiba's father was on vacation in Las Vegas, the odds for Auburn to win the national championship were 500 to 1, reported ESPN's Darren Rovell.

Skiba, who graduated from Auburn in 1998, asked his dad to put $100 on the team.

"And he said, 'You're crazy,'" Skiba told ESPN.

His father, however, also placed a $10 bet on Auburn, which could yield him $5,000.

Skiba and his father could not be reached for comment.

Though some fans advised Skiba to place a second bet against Auburn to hedge his original bet, he decided to have faith in his alma mater.

"At the end of the day, I want us to win the game," Skiba told ESPN. "We're playing for the damn national championship. Winning the money still doesn't even seem real."
