We’ve boasted in this space before about how much of a success the CMJ showcase we co-curated was. We Have Band, Phantogram, X-Wife, Electric Tickle Machine and Sleigh Bells all, um, slayed. Since CMJ, however, we’ve been kinda stunned by the paroxysms of praise that have been bubbled up for the band that opened our show, Sleigh Bells. (Not too stunned, to be clear; they are damn good, after all.) They’re a boy/girl outfit (who aren’t dating, they’d like to make clear). Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss. He’s a former hardcore band member; she used to be in a girl group. While their back story sounds, per Derek, like a “Tom Hanks movie,” their music is hard and fast and loud, pushing the level into the red on almost every one of their songs. Speaking of their songs, pretty much the only place to hear them is on their myspace page or elsewhere on the web. The band hasn’t even put an album out yet. You’ll be hearing more from them soon. In the meanwhile, enjoy this interview.
