I’m glad she acknowledged that being gay isn’t a choice for all gay people. But still, I object to her choice of words. I feel that anyone who has spent a good percentage of their life with one orientation and then switches to the other should be defined as bisexual. I guess she takes issue with that word, and I guess it’s possible she was never sexually attracted to her male partner of 15 years, but if that’s true, then it really wasn’t a choice, was it?

I identify as a straight woman, but there is a bicurious side to me. I doubt I will ever act on it, and if I do, it will probably be casual experimentation and not a life partner thing. I think a huge percentage of people have at least the potential to be bi under the right circumstances. But for those who have a strong orientation one way or the other, I don’t believe it’s a choice and it can only hurt the cause of gay rights for her to have said that.

I don’t think it should matter whether one chooses to be gay or straight. If Nixon says that for her it was a choice, then for her it was a choice. She shouldn’t have to lie just to promote a political idea. One could choose to be a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim. One’s right to practice their religion shouldn’t be diminished simply because it was a choice. Maybe the gay political movement should embrace the idea that their rights should be respected because everyone should have the right to choose the way they want to live. It’s called freedom.

Ummm, Being gay or Bi, etc. IS a choice. You’re not just born gay thinking I’m gonna plug some dude in the behind because that’s what I was born to do. And while we are on the topic…… Can the gay’s stop being so whiny. Yeah, we see that youre gay, you don’t have to announce it and shove it in people’s faces. Because of all the whining, I now have to home school my child because CA doesn’t have any guts to tell the gay’s to keep their mouths shut about history. CA caters to the gay’s way to much, it’s ridiculous. You wanna be gay fine, but don’t shove it down people’s or my kid’s throats.

I completely agree with the blogger in the article. Miss Nixon, as a bisexual, myopically uses the words “gay” or “straight” in place of her choice to live with a woman or a man respectively. Being gay is not a choice. Being bisexual is not a choice either. Many of the comments on the thread regarding who someone sexually, intrinsically is make illogical comparisons or are from people who frankly do not know what they are talking about and certainly let their ignorance be known by posting. Miss Nixon on the other hand should be aware of her, albeit limited, visibility and get a lesson in semantics.

It’s so stupid that the gay community cares so much about the “choice” issue. It doesn’t matter whether or not someone is born gay, that is literally irrelevant. Civil rights aren’t dependent on someone being born a certain way.

Sexual attraction is not an intellectual mechanism, so I think her whole argument is a lot of BS. True romantic desire is the result of chemicals and hormones, not conscious decisions. Only Cynthia knows whether she’s actually attracted to her shiny new gay lover or not…but regardless of that, her argument about choice is logically flawed, because that attraction is not up to her. If she truly has those feelings, she did not put them there, she merely chose to act on them. If her choice was purely intellectual, as she claims, than she’s not actually gay in the first place, she’s just a person having gay sex for fun. On top of her self-serving, incomplete logic, the manner in which she’s broadcast this smacks of both arrogance and myopia.

I just don’t get why she had to blurt it out publicly , she could of just told her closest family and friends , she knew that it would cause controversy , she could of used a different set of words , she could of said I was straight for most of my life it wasn’t a choice , but I was also born gay I still had those tendencies,I don’t think anyone chooses to be gay, why would they , I think even if you were considered straight for most of your life and you come out later in life you were still born gay you still have gay tendencies its something that stays with you your whole life even if you don’t realize it its just something that’s innate in you, now if she wants to consider herself a bisexual than that’s a different story , because when your bisexual you are born as both gay and straight and later in life you choose what you want that’s the only time that choice comes into play , but if she is going to sit there and say she wasn’t born gay that it was a choice then she is in complete denial.

Sexual preference is just that. Those who choose to be gay do so knowing that they are a minority. Some may choose non hetero lifestyles due to conditions out of their control (who knows how they were raised?) that does not mean they were “born with it”.

The only issue anyone really cares about here is marriage. Civil unions should be fine and should be given all of the same legal observances marriage has. Marriage though is not for a court or anyone else to define. That’s already been done by the highest power.
