For Demi Moore, seeking professional treatment for the multiple "stresses in her life," as her publicist said Tuesday, must feel awfully familiar. The 49-year-old actress has been down this road before, notably in the '80s when she went to rehab for drug and alcohol abuse.

People magazine reported in 1996 that Moore's alleged dependence on substances got so dire that Joel Schumacher, who directed Moore in "St. Elmo's Fire" and made her a star, threatened to fire her if she didn't get clean. "Moore promptly entered a rehab program and arrived on the set two weeks later clean and sober," People reported.

Moore's problems started before then. Alcoholism runs in her family. According to People, when Moore tried to get her mother, Virginia Guynes, to seek treatment by putting her up at an elite treatment center, Guynes walked away, prompting Moore to break ties with her. Guynes also had a long record of arrests for crimes, including drunken driving and arson. She died of a brain tumor in 1998.

Moore's latest decision to seek treatment for "stress and exhaustion" prompted her to drop out of the Linda Lovelace biopic in which she was slated to play feminist Gloria Steinem. It seems that since filing for divorce from Ashton Kutcher in November, the actress has been plagued by insecurities. She revealed some of her fears to Harper's Bazaar in a recent interview.

"What scares me the most is not knowing and accepting that just about everything is not in my control," she said. "That makes me feel unsafe."

After splitting from Kutcher, Moore vacationed solo in Hawaii. Still, the actress who was previously married to actor Bruce Willis said her other fear is not having the courage to reach her full potential, which would mean not finding love again.

"I would say what scares me is that I'm going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I'm really not lovable, that I'm not worthy of being loved," she said. "That there's something fundamentally wrong with me."

Meanwhile, her soon-to-be ex-husband is dealing with the divorce in his own way: By partying. Kutcher is in Brazil doing a fashion shoot for the brand Colcci and has been seen out and about with multiple celebrities, including Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio.
