The world knows her simply as Jewel, the four-time Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her breakout hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul," and who has stayed on top of the charts thanks to her loyal fans.

For the past year, however, another role has occupied the superstar's time: that of mom.

"It's remarkable," Jewel, 38, told " Good Morning America" correspondent Cameron Mathison, who caught up with the music star at the Stephenville, Texas, ranch she shares with her husband, rodeo star Ty Murray, 42, and their 14-month-old son, Kase Townes.

"Everybody tells you…you can't imagine the love, and it's really true," she said. "I was telling my husband it feels like a Christmas present you get to open for the rest of your life. He just keeps unwrapping and unwrapping and every day is a new, exciting layer."

Life as a mom inspired Jewel to become an author. After writing and recording two child-friendly albums - "Lullaby" and "The Merry Goes Round," - Jewel has now released a children's book called "That's What I'll Do."

Jewel calls the book a love note to her son. It features illustrations by Amy June Bates and comes with a CD featuring a song dedicated to him.

"I wanted to write him something that he could have forever, as a keepsake," she told Mathison. "I wanted to tell him that I loved him in an interesting way. Those are words that become so cliché and for kids, you know, I really wanted to spark my son's imagination."

Jewel says Kase, who was born July 11, 2011, already likes the music he inspired.

"We listed to the song when we're driving on the road or hanging out at home," Jewel said. "It's been fun, like, to watch him start to realize, 'Is that her si - is that Mom singing?'"

Both Jewel and Murray, a nine-time world champion bull rider, say they are hands-on parents who have forgone the luxury of nannies and help that their professional success could provide.

"We wanted to have a child because we wanted to have a child," said Jewel, who just finished filming "Ring of Fire" for Lifetime in the lead role of June Carter Cash. "We didn't want anybody else to have him."

"I pinch myself every day," she said. "I'm a girl that went from being homeless to doing really well. I've made money and what is that for if you don't take the time to be with your baby. It affords me that luxury."

Another luxury for Jewel, she revealed to Mathison, is having a husband who is both a cowboy and a dad willing to change diapers.

"Real men do change diapers," she said. "You know, he was really excited to have the baby and I knew he was gonna be a really hands-on dad…I mean, he just doesn't miss a thing."
