It was a night of music, comedy and celebrities at “12.12.12 — The Concert for Sandy Relief,” held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday night.

While several top artists in the rock and pop genres performed for the MSG crowd, actors such as James Gandolfini, Jimmy Fallon and Jack McBrayer manned a phone bank where they accepted donations from viewers.

Forty cable networks televised and numerous websites streamed the event, the proceeds of which benefited The Robin Hood Relief Fund and victims of Superstorm Sandy. More than $30 million was raised through ticket sales alone.

Fittingly, the concert began at 7:30 p.m. ET with a “local” artist — New Jersey’s Bruce Springsteen. The Boss and his E Street Band kicked off his half-hour set with a performance of “Land of Hope & Dreams.”

As he introduced “My City of Ruins,” Bruce noted that he wrote the song about Asbury Park, N.J. He described the Jersey Shore as an area for both the rich and poor, adding, “I pray that that characteristic remains along the Jersey Shore because that’s what makes it special.”

Bruce mixed “My City of Ruins” with a bit of “Jersey Girl,” a favorite of Springsteen fans that was originally recorded by Tom Waits.

Springsteen was joined by another Jersey rocker, Jon Bon Jovi, for his final song, “Born to Run.” Springsteen returned the favor during Bon Jovi’s set, teaming with the band on their hit “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.”

Springsteen and Bon Jovi were far from the only legendary rockers to take the stage over the course of the night.

Paul McCartney, the closing act, provided a special moment when he brought the former members of Nirvana on stage — minus the late Kurt Cobain. Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl sang a new song called “Cut Me Some Slack.” McCartney also sprinkled in some crowd-pleasers like “Helter Skelter” and “Live and Let Die.”
The Rolling Stones, in the middle of a 50th anniversary tour, played just two songs, including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Mick Jagger joked at one point, “This has to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden.”

That “collection” also included The Who, which saluted their late drummer, Keith Moon, by screening footage of him singing during their performance of “Bell Boy.” And as he took over vocals on “Baba O’Riley,” Pete Townshend changed the lyrics “It’s only teenage wasteland” to “It’s only Sandy wasteland.”

The other artists on the bill were Long Island native Billy Joel; Manhattan’s own Alicia Keys; Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, who was joined by Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder; Eric Clapton; rapper Kanye West; and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who sang a duet with R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe.

The marathon concert ended with Alicia Keys returning to the piano to perform “Empire State of Mind” as McCartney, members of various public works departments and individuals personally affected by the Superstorm gathered on stage.

The telecast featured celebrity appearances by Billy Crystal, Susan Sarandon, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Kristen Stewart, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Diddy, Olivia Wilde, Steve Buscemi, Chris Rock, Seth Meyers, Brian Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

An album of select performances from “12.12.12″ will be sold on iTunes beginning December 18.

It was a very great and fun show! …and “ranknfile” what you say is not true in this incident. The RobinHood Foundation is quite respected and VERY ethical. People must try to stop being so cynical.

Ranknfile, 100% of donations made to The Robin Hood Foundation go to the people in need. The board pays all of the administrative costs.

Well, let’s wait and see if we hear directly from the Hurricane Sandy victims who lost everything. They will be able to tell us if they actually received any significant assistance. I certainly hope the Robinhood Foundation is what it claims to be. However, Almighty God is the actual healer, through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke of our personal spiritual “house” or dwelling, which is far more important for our quality and longevity of life.

“I am Almighty God; I have not changed.” Malachi 3:6. Our Almighty God’s Son, Jesus told us, “Therefore, everyone that hears these sayings of mine and does them will be likened to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock-mass. And the rain poured down and the floods came and the winds blew and lashed against that house, but it did not cave in, for it had been founded upon the rock-mass. Furthermore, everyone hearing these sayings of mine and not doing them will be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. And the rain poured down and the floods came and the winds blew and struck against that house and it caved in, and its collapse was great.” Matthew 7:24-27 in the Bible. Study Jesus’ teachings and gain real life.

What a terrific show! I was in heaven most of the night…thought I’d gone in the other direction when Kanye ‘performed’. Why he was included in this all-star event will always be a mystery to me. I’m betting there was a decrease in donations when he ‘performed’. Overall it was a great show with most performers from my generation leading the way. Surely a great number of donations were pledged for this worthy cause!

Wow, a big thanks to these performers for caring & raising money to help the victims of hurricane Sandy. The Rolling Stones diverting from the tour to help was amazing & what an all star cast that sang throughout the entire evening. The music was first rate. The concert played simultaneously on two stations here locally so I am sure that the donations are still coming in. It was uplifting hearing all of the musicians singing for a good cause.

Go right to Robinhood’s site. Tells you all and gives the financials there too.

Just the Haitian Earthquake Relief effort…keep a watchful eye on where the money really ends up.

Has beens, never beens in my opinion, exploiting a situation for publicity.

what was kanye wearing?

@CAROLYN…He was wearing a leather skirt. Very tranny.

The Who was really excellent, but most of the rest of it was subpar and boring.

I love the Rolling Stones!

Posted by: Kristen Hague | December 13, 2012, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

Bon Jovi and Billy Joel put the most life into their performances. The Rolling Stones acted and then proceeded to vocalize as though they were “forced” into their appearance. I was really surprised by them. I guess they are just tired and grouchy. Thought the Kanye booking was really out of place. Lenny Kravitz would have been a perfect fit for this ensemble of legends. Gee, Paul, I thought with your coming up last, there would be a big finish with everyone. Nope, the end was very anticlimatic. (And please do not every sing that syrupy, sappy “Valentine” song again.)

“I love the Rolling Stones!”

I love them also, but there wasn’t much to their brief photo-op performance last night, whereas others, especially The Who, gave it tons of energy.

Posted by: ridley knows | December 13, 2012, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

Add in Lenny Kravitz (as suggested above), and add in Led Zeppelin (or at least Jimmy Page), and cut out Mr. Autotune Nobody, Kanye, and obviously have the Stones play a real set with sincere energy, and then it would be tops. But hey, hope it helped the cause, and I surely hope (but somewhat doubt) that real regular suffering Sandy victims will get this money.

Did all these songs listed on the playlist actually make it on the air? I didn’t get a chance to watch it all but saw bits and pieces throughout the night but I thought I saw the whole last part with Paul McCartney and I don’t remember him doing Helter Skelter.

I am still disappointed in Bruce Springsteen for the way he continually snubbed Governor Christie, until Governor Christie sucked up to President Obama after the Sandy Storms. That was so hypocritical. He helps a lot of people and raises a lot of money and awareness — but his election behavior changed forever my opinion of him as a live-and-let-live troubador.

An overall LEGENDARY fundraiser for a worthy, ethical group of people, the ROBIN HOOD FOUNDATION. My personal kudos to 1. Alicia Keys for “holding the fort” as the only featured female performer. I plan to see her LIVE next chance I get and 2. Chris Martin of COLDPLAY, and his pleasant surprise performance with MIchael Stipe. I agree with most of the comments re: Kanye West….rap does NOT (in my opinion) translate well in big arenas. He was energetic, but his sound was “rough”. The old time Brit rockers love New York and vice versa.

I noticed that not one of the people commenting here..mentioned a donation????????? Really? Not one donated?? And Yes..I donated to this very worthy cause.
