The big-screen adaptation of “Les Miserables” is being lauded by crowds and critics alike, but singer Adam Lambert says the film “suffered massively” from “great actors PRETENDING to be singers.”

The “American Idol” runner up sent out a flurry of tweets over the weekend after seeing the film. Lambert called the film “visually impressive” with “great emotional performances,” but criticized the singing.

“The industry will say ‘these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live’ but why not cast actors who could actually sound good?” Lambert wrote. “I felt like I should ignore the vocals and focus on the emotional subtext–but the singing was so distracting at times it pulled me out.”

While he lauded director Tom Hooper for having the actors perform live rather than lip synch to a recorded track, he said Hooper should have “sweetened the vocals” in the studio.

Lambert did praise the performances by Anne Hathaway as the prostitute Fantine and stage actor Aaron Tveit, who played revolutionary Enjolras. “Helena B Carter and Sasha B Cohen (sic) were great too,” Lambert wrote.

After apologizing for being so harsh, because he said, “I grew up w this musical and so my expectations are quite high,” Lambert offered a final word about the film. “DO go see it for Anne Hathaways performance. It’s was breathtaking,” he said.

I am surprised they had them sing Live. Not one of the actors are singers.

A year can’t be fully complete without Adam Lambert sticking his foot in his mouth at least once! At least he didn’t say kids should be allowed to play with drugs.

Somebody’s got a case of sour grapes. Boo hoo, Adam. The movie was created beautifully and some of the musical performances are amazing and elicit true emotional responses from the viewers. Isn’t that what a movie is all about?

Colm Wilkinson was in the movie and Samantha Barks. He has to give them credit. Colm Wilkinson stands alone as one of the top singers in the industry from the stage to now film.

Adam Lambert knows what he’s talking about when it comes to singing and musical theater. I appreciate his willingness to be completely honest, and his extensive vocal training makes his opinion informed and credible. He respects the art above all.

Was there really a need to make yet another movie of Les Mis so soon after the last one?

Posted by: ORCATMDBP | December 31, 2012, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Adam Lambert is an idiot. Clearly Lambert has not seen many of the classic musicals that were good to great movies even with less than stellar singing from some of the stars. So, something Lambert obviously does not understand about movies is the reality that subpar acting will pull people/viewers out (i.e. end suspension of disbelief) and thus ruin a movie much faster than less than stellar singing. In fact, if subpar singing, or even bad singing, fits the character and the flow of the plot well enough the quality of the singing can actually be irrelevant to the quality of a movie. In other words, for movies the quality of the acting and the script and production values are far more important to most viewers than the quality of the singing in a movie musical.

Agreed, it was a boring 2 hours and 45 minutes. I almost walked out. This winter has seen not one good uplifting movie. In the 1930′s during the great depression, Judy Garland had uplifting movie after uplifting movie. Today its all death and destruction and sadness. We like our economy and our government are lost in a whirlwind of despair.

I read his tweets- he was just expressing his viewpoint. As a singer, with a history of musical theater, I respect his opinion. He had many positive comments to make about the show. He even encouraged everyone to go see it.I am sure there are many people tweeting about the show. Media just makes more of this than they should.

Adam who? I enjoyed Les Mis… didn’t go for the quality of the singers, but for the quality of the story and how it was portrayed.

Posted by: James | December 31, 2012, 1:10 pm 1:10 pm

Why was Lea Michelle not in there? Because she can sing, and the director could not put people from the theater who could sing next to these so-called musical actors. This movie is a failure. It started out great and it ended great, all the stuff in the middle is a snoozer; and this Pink Floyd style of singing, I gave up in high school. Please no more movies like this. Either get classically trained singers in the musical or make it a talky. Can you imagine “Lincoln” done like this?

It also begs to the failure of the author. Emile Zola was the original, this Hugo plagiarizer, like the plagiarizer Steinbeck off of Beverly Brannan’s work, are elitist opportunists who do not give proper credit to their sources. They appear fictional, yet they have historical fact.

Posted by: Angelgroove | December 31, 2012, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

I just saw the movie. Adam is right. While I really do like Crow and Jackman as actors, Russel just shouldn’t sing. His had a slight ‘pop’ singing element to his style – totally inappropriate for Les Mis. Hugh can sing, but his voice is just way too thin. It was odd to see Colm Wilkinson on the screen, knowing he could blow both of the lead actors away if he wanted to (singing wise at least).

Anne Hathaway sounded like the Glinda the Good Witch. The male chorus singers had the best voices. Truly, they should have at least coached Hugh and Russel, and just picked someone else for Anne’s part. The woman who played Éponine, Natalya Angel Wallace, was quite good. Maybe she and Hathaway should have switched parts.

What some writers perhaps fail to recognize here is that Adam Lambert #1 Has a right to his opinion, just like everyone else here and elsewhere. Many professional movie reviewers/critics voiced similar opinions. #2 Has many years of professional Musical Theater in his resume so logically he will be focused on the vocals #3 Mr. Lambert said that he grew up with this musical and as a result had certain expectations, again his prerogative and right as a movie goer. #4 Has had 20 years of experience singing, with extensive vocal training, including classical Opera, so he is not just some “no talent reality show hack” as one writer above so ..eloquently.. put it.. #5 He did not criticize all of the vocals, and he did not say the movie was bad. Just that some of the vocals were distracting for him, and took away from his experience. He had high praise for some…including Anne Hathaway. #6 This is not a case of sour grapes: again, its an educated OPINION. #7 And that’s MY opinion! : ))

love adam but i also adored the film. hathaway was beyond amazing. the only one i didn’t like was sacha baron cohen as thenardier. that character was supposed to be the comic relief. he didn’t relieve much. the movie is stunninglly gorgeous.

Posted by: pr63 | December 31, 2012, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm

Sorry, my bad – It was not Anne Hathaway who sounded like Glinda. It was Amanda Seyfried as Cosette.

Posted by: Mark | December 31, 2012, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

I’m no fan of Lambert, and his opinion of this movie means very little to me. I have no critical comments about him except that perhaps he made comments re Les Mis to get some free publicity. Who knows. Reason I’m commenting is comparisons. I’ve seen some movie version of Les Mis (many years ago), but not a theater version. I’m not well-informed on the history behind the story. Not sure I’ll see this version, but I was surprised by who’s cast b/c I didn’t consider those I recognized as professional singers. Seems there’s a reason for that! But I could say the same things about Phantom of the Opera. I saw the play on Broadway (NYC) and the movie with Gerard Butler. Because the story and music were great, the fact some were unknown to be singers didn’t affect me. Case in point – Minie Driver was actually opera trained and I’d never heard her sing before Phantom. She was awesome. So, maybe Lambert was jealous he didn’t get cast in this version of Les Mis. In any event, those who love the music and the story will be enthralled and happy to watch. That’s how I felt when Phantom was finally filmed and I could rewatch the DVD, unlike a live play.

Posted by: Spitting into the Wind | December 31, 2012, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

This is nothing new from Lambert. He has a history of slamming other performers and puffing himself up. The guy is just classless, sad to say. Lambert has little cause to criticize anyone else’s singing when the albums he has put out are so full of auto-tuned garbage. Perhaps he should try to improve that ear-piercing noise he calls his music before criticizing others.

Posted by: cynic | December 31, 2012, 3:00 pm 3:00 pm

Sounds like he is trying to get some free publicity.

Posted by: Catherine | December 31, 2012, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

Lambert was merely tweeting to his fans his opinion of the movie – which you, I, and he have every right to do. There’s no need to make anything more of it. Lambert’s a great, generous guy who’s always praising other performers and their music. To say the horrible things some posters here are doing indicates that thet don’t know this wonderful man at all.

Posted by: Lee | December 31, 2012, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

Everyone has a right to their own opinion, even Adam Lambert. I don’t understand why people feel the need to insult him when that’s all he did – he went to see a movie, a movie about an opera that he grew up enjoying – and he was less than impressed. He tweeted his critique to his followers. He is completely entitled to his opinion, and I happen to agree with him that if you’re going to do an opera, you damn well better have some great operatic singers, otherwise, it’s going to be crap. However, he DID give props where due, such as for Anne Hathaway.
as for @Spitting Into The Wind – you are so wrong about Adam, you should do your research before slamming someone else – Adam NEVER slams other performers OR puffs himself up – he is ALWAYS giving props to other artists – Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Pink, Muse, Xtina, Gaga, Rihanna, – just to name a FEW. Adam is NOT auto-tuned – you are an idiot for even thinking that – he is the best live performer with to auto-tuning or lip-syncing – most other “artists” out there always lip sync live – And Adam sounds even better live than he does recorded. His “Trespassing” album was #1 on billboard – it is a fantastic album, made Album of the year on several polls, you should really check it out, it’s great.

Bottom line here – Adam has a history in musical theater, he loves Les Mis and he can out-sing most other artists of today – he was asked by Brian May & Roger Taylor of QUEEN to front Queen this year – which he did – 6 shows this summer – voted best live act of 2012 – so he has every right to judge other people’s vocal talents, or lack thereof.

Posted by: Michele | December 31, 2012, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

That’s his opinion and it’s just as valid as anyone else’s. Of course, having seen the movie, I agree with him 100%, so I have no problem with hearing it! LOL I have to say, however, that more distracting than the poor singing was the camera angles — the camera was way too close to the singers’ faces, which made their straining to hit notes even more obvious.

Posted by: Mari | December 31, 2012, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

I’m laughing at all you people slamming Adam Lambert. One – there’s a 99.5% chance that you have not even seen this movie yet; two – there’s a 99% chance that you are a fan of one of the other idols whose career is going no where; and three – you guys really do follow Adam’s career don’t you. Love how you know every little thing about him and you all follow him from one news story to another. I’m still laughing at you and I always will. Don’t be jealous – the green little monster will eat you up inside. Besides, you need to get a life I swear. Hahahaha

This Adam Lambert is a jerk! I have a classical music background and was impressed with the “le miz” singers vocal range. I am sure he is like every pop singer today who screetches instead of singing today. I am so sick of contemporary singers who for the most part sound alike and have nothing special about their voice. I will go for the trained voice anyday. Maybe this Lambert has sour grapes for auditioning for the movie and told he can’t sing.

Posted by: Internetos | December 31, 2012, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

Leave it to Glambert.. The biggest “pretend singer” of them all. ON STAGE, the roles require a superb singer to convey the emotion of the scene because the audience rarely sees their faces. The film has the luxery of the “close up” so we can SEE the agony in the acor’s faces. What role did he try out for? Thank God he wasn’t cast in any part of the film.

Hugh Jackman is a Tony Award winner who has appeared on stage in Broadway and London’s West End musicals.

Posted by: whatevs | December 31, 2012, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

He’s entitled to critique a movie he paid to go see just like anybody else. It’s not like he’s the only one slamming the movie. I saw it and thought Anne Hathaway was decent. Not great but decent. The girl who played Eponine was the best singer and actress and of course she was from the stage. Hugh Jackman has had some good turns on broadway and off broadway still isn’t the best of broadway and it showed in this movie. Voice was thin. Amanda Seyfried was horrific and somebody should have pulled her out the minute her vocal audition was over. Then Russell Crowe showed up to muddle his way through the worst rendition of Stars I’ve ever heard in my life. None of this was helped by the director’s caving to the studio to keep the movie under 2 and half hours (2:29) because it lacked the ability to tell the story properly and the scenes rushed from one song to another. The worst part was they sped up the songs for two reasons. One to keep the time under and also so the singers did not have to hold the notes out like proper singers. All in all, this was not worth the wait of so many years and I’m wondering what they spent all that time in production for just to come out with something that seemed cobbled together at the last minute. This movie was not worthy of Les Miserable and I’m sad Colm Wilkinson had to endure having his voice wasted in a subpar movie musical version of the best musical ever. Can we not have Baz Luhrman do it properly?

Posted by: Jessica | December 31, 2012, 4:50 pm 4:50 pm

So let’s hear him sing some of the songs live. Could be done on GMA. Another self serving hack who’s trying to get some PR at the expense of others.

Posted by: Ed | December 31, 2012, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

I think that the Jackman and Crowe should thank their stars for modern audio sampling and editing technology, which has advanced a long way since the days portrayed in “Singing in the Rain”. I plan to see it with a friend, but wonder how much of the film’s wow factor will be due to the epic staging and reputation of the musical on which it is based, rather than the musical performances.

Posted by: MyTake | December 31, 2012, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

Jackman became known outside of Australia in 1998, when he played the leading role of Curly in the Royal National Theatre’s acclaimed stage production of Oklahoma!, in London’s West End. The performance earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Jackman said “I totally felt like it can’t get any better than this. On some level that production will be one of the highlights of my career.” He also starred in the 1999 film version of the same stage musical, which has been screened in many countries. In 2002, Jackman sang the role of Billy Bigelow in the musical Carousel in a special concert performance at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. In 2004, Jackman won the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his 2003–2004 Broadway portrayal of Australian songwriter and performer Peter Allen in the hit musical The Boy from Oz, which he also performed in Australia in 2006. Eat your heart out Lambert.

Ridiculous!

Adam Lambert fronts Queen in Europe and receives rave reviews- no one in U.S. media takes notice
He performs on Voice of China (500 million viewers) and on MAMAs (over 2 billion viewers)- no one in U.S. media takes notice.

Adam Lambert praises lots of artists all the time -no one takes notice.

But when he gives one small critique over something he knows and cares deeply about, BOOOM , everybody writes about it and condems him. Then people are like: who is he to judge. And only because they haven’t heard about anything he has done during the year since media hasn’t told them about it. :(

Posted by: Erika | December 31, 2012, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

Can’t stand Adam Lambert but he is entirely right. If you are not a Les Mis fan (like me) it’s very likely this will bore you. If you are, like my wife, it’s very likely it will disappoint you. There are just two good song performances. Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. Jackman can’t hit the high notes. And Russell Crowe can’t hit ANY note. He sounds like a cat is scratching his tonsils. It may do for those as devoted as Twi-hards but it is very hit and miss.

What’s the point in having a singer who can’t act? People come to see the actors act, not to sing. It’s far easier to fake the singing then fake a singer who can’t act.

Posted by: Brian P | December 31, 2012, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm

Actors should be judged on their singing, just as singers are judged on their acting. I love the movie but the singing for the most part was pathetic. Lambert would have been better served to keep his mouth shut, but he was dead right on his assessment of the vocals.

Adam is right. The singing was horrible. He is the best live performer in the music industry today so he has the credentials to know what good singing is. ANYONE who claims that Adam can’t sing is a person who has no taste or credible judgment in music. Who cares what his lame detractors say/

Posted by: Kerrey Kolksch | December 31, 2012, 11:34 pm 11:34 pm

This musical has very little other scenes outside of singing. It flits from one song to another. The longest break in between songs is less than a couple of minutes. Otherwise it’s basically a concert on film. In other words, the acting is minimal and secondary and the singing is the main point of the film.

Posted by: Megan | December 31, 2012, 11:43 pm 11:43 pm

I just saw Les Mis tonight and I can say now that Adam was too kind and I applaud him for his candidness and honesty for saying what many are too chicken to admit.
Aside from Ann Hathaway and a couple of kids, the film was torturous to sit through. Even Hugh Jackman’s voice was like chalk on a blackboard. Whatever experiment this director was running, it failed and not just because of the singing. Films, as opposed to stage musicals, need character development to pull audiences in, to create the kind of energy live plays possess. LM’s characters came across like cardboard cutouts. And if you’re going for realism and grit, cardboard characters just won’t do.This film was begging for added scenes and dialogue to fill it out for film. Adam is right and speaking frankly is just as much his right as it is mine.

Okay, Sarah – who are YOU to criticize HIM if you have never heard him sing & don’t even know who he is? I certainly did not care for him during American Idol, but heard a couple songs on the radio that I liked – only to find out later they were by him. Next time you horrible people watch a movie that you dont like, just remember all these things that you have said about someone else who had an honest opinion. Adam Lambert is the best live entertainer in the music industry today. He not only has an extraordinary voice, he also puts on a great show. He is someone qualified to judge vocal performances. The negative comments here regarding Mr. Lambert are made by people who are either hateful or stupid. Claiming Adam Lambert can’t sing is like claiming the ocean is not wet.

Posted by: Kerrey Kolksch | January 1, 2013, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

I saw the film and can’t figure out what the big deal is. A singer and former theater geek gives an opinion in which he doesn’t slam anyone in particular and praises quite a bit. I thought some of the singing was not good, but it didn’t bother me because I was involved in the story. So this guy had it distract him from the story Again, hundreds of articles and comments about this? Why? WTH is going on here?

Posted by: Jakie | January 1, 2013, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm

Anyone who claims to have a classical music background and in the same breath claims that Adam Lambert cannot sing is clearly lying, especially if they then call Les Mis ‘Le Miz’ And if they think he has only been in the entertainment buisness ‘a few months’ they are clearly showing their ignorance, try 20 years and you’d about have it.
So many stupid ignorant and trolling comments here, just because someone has an opinion on a film.
Also just because someone is more famous than someone else doesn’t make them more credible on any subject.
And just because the film industry has decided that this will be the big Oscar winning film this year doesn’t mean that everyone is obliged to love it, some of us can think for ourselves and call bullshit if we want to. Same as we can on the Music industry and their fake awards shows.

Posted by: magsmagenta | January 1, 2013, 4:21 pm 4:21 pm

Anyone who knows anything about musical theater knows that it’s changing. It’s a business trying to find fresh ways to keep up with competition and keep the interest of its patrons. It’s all about survival in a world filled with new technology that makes stage productions look ordinary. Mr. Lambert is an entertainer, not a businessman.

Just a few corrections: #1 album, successful and sold-out tour, chart positions all over the world, engagement requests from all over the world, European tour with Queen, millions of sales and millions of dollars further and there are still people thinking it is smart to make comments about Adam’s supposed failure on every online article they can find all over the net. All these writings do not stop him, Adam just moves past those haters and on with his career, uses their negativity and hate as a stepping stones on his personal path. Brave and with strength.

Those who think that Adam is wrong or was out of place to make this comment about the singing in this movie take note: Russell Crowe just tweeted and agreed with Adam. So are these posters who wrote that Adam is an idiot for having this opinion now all thinking that Russell is an idiot too, or are they quickly changing their opinion about what Adam wrote? Just wondering. lol

Adam was on the money with his comments…so what if it made some people upset…old saying…the truth hurts…remember. The review from the New Yorker was very harsh…makes Adam’s take mild…and even Russell Crow said Adam was not wrong…Haters are so ignorant.

Regardless of what Lambert thinks about the film, he does not need to publicly tweet his harsh criticisms. How would he respond if Crowe or others tweeted harsh criticisms of his work? Lambert claims to be all about love, acceptance, kindness, etc. but does not demonstrate that in the way that he carries himself. He should reconsider the idea of treating others as we would want to be treated.

He’s such a trash, never misses a chance to be published. At least those actors get respect, but someone like Lambert who said kids should try drugs because it’s fun would never get respect in the industry. How’s his boyfriend doing?

It’s interesting to note that Adam’s detractors are: Those whose ugly and mean remarks make veiled and overt references to his orientation, and must fear what Adam is brave and proud to acknowledge; those who don’t know anything about Adam’s stunning voice, his chart topping and critically acclaimed #1 Album of 2012, Trespassing, his worldwide popularity and superstardom except that he is gay, and are prejudiced or jealous of him because of this fact; those who know of his talents and breathtaking stage presence and still diss him because they cannot accept brilliance and beauty in a proud gay man.
