Their wedding photo broke Instagram records, but Kanye West claims that for years people didn't understand his interracial relationship with Kim Kardashian.

"You have to be able to take the lashes of people not understanding," the 37-year-old rapper told the Cannes Lions' International Festival of Creativity panel Tuesday, according to the UK's Daily Mail. "It took two years of people not understanding an interracial relationship like that. You have to take the lashes and be able to swim in backlash."

The pair were knocked after appearing in West's "Bound 2? music video, which was famously parodied by James Franco and Seth Rogen.

West said the Vogue cover, in which he appeared with Kardashian, helped turn the tide.

"I still take a bashing for the Bound video," West said, according to the Mail. "I always say that if Vogue had come out before the Bound video then everyone would have been like, 'Oh it's OK' and that's the endorsement. It took something established like Vogue to make everything OK and we had to wait. Like we had the wedding and then they were like 'that's cool now,' because we were told by people who endorsed it."

Regardless of public opinion, West said there's only one woman for him.

"I can't be with any girl but Kim because that's the girl I look at her pictures the most and I get turned on the most," he told the crowd, according to the New York Post.
