Sure, the Oscars are a night when Hollywood come together to recognize the best performances of the year.

However, let’s be honest: Some of you will be watching, at least in part, to see what the stars are wearing to the show.

Britt Aboutaleb, the managing editor of Yahoo Style, talked to ABC News about what she thinks the nominees for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress should choose for the big night — and in some cases, her picks are a bit more edgy than what those actresses have worn previously.

Meet the Lesser Known Oscar Nominees

Complete List of Oscar Nominees 2015

Best Actress Nominees
Julianne Moore: For the “Still Alice” star, Aboutaleb suggested a sexy jumpsuit. “The detail here is incredible,” she said. “A jumpsuit would be so cool, and if anyone could pull it off and make it black tie appropriate, it would be her.”

Marion Cotillard: Cotillard, who was nominated for “Two Days, One Night,” is the face of Dior and often wears the designer’s clothes, so Aboutaleb went that route. She also chose a silhouette that Cotillard has previously worn. Plus, “that color would be just spectacular with her pale skin and dark brown hair,” she said. “It’s a perfect fit.”

Felicity Jones: “I always want someone to go short and if anyone could pull it off it’s Felicity,” Aboutaleb said of the “Theory of Everything” star. As a result, she chose this Giambattista Valli number, from the same collection as Rihanna’s show-stopping Grammys dress. “She’s young and cute and she’s really made a big play for the fashion world,” she continued. “She looks great in clothes!”

Rosamund Pike: Aboutaleb selected an on-trend white Ulyana Sergeenko gown for the “Gone Girl” actress, who recently welcomed a baby. “She’s been wearing a lot of white lately and it looks really good on her,” she explained. “This one is really girly but also really sexy, and she looks amazing, so this would be really great [for her].

Reese Witherspoon: For the “Wild” star, Aboutaleb picked a dress that she hopes the actress would consider. “We all know she has this wild child inside of her and I just wish she would try something new on the red carpet,” she explained. “It would be really wonderful to see her break out of the mold and try something sexy and different.” To complete the look, Aboutaleb suggested her wearing a smokey eye and slicked-back hear. “I imagine she’d wear a slip under it,” she added, “but I think it would be really cool. It’s a really special dress.”

Best Supporting Actress Nominees
Patricia Arquette: Aboutaleb predicted that the “Boyhood” actress will opt for a dress with a bit more coverage, which makes this Alexis Mabille gown a perfect fit. “She looks great in jewel tones and it’s going to be her big night,” she said. “This dress makes such a statement: ‘I’m a winner.’”

Laura Dern: For the “Wild” actress, Aboutaleb suggested a dreamy Valentino gown in the spirit of her character. “It’s so so gorgeous,” she said. “Laura has this ethereal quality too. She doesn’t age, she looks incredible and she has that long beautiful blonde hair. There is a little bit of that fairytale quality.”

Keira Knightley: Knightley is pregnant, so Aboutaleb suggested a dress with a bit more room to accommodate her growing bump. “This is regal and spectacular, but also sexy, and you probably want to feel that way when you are up for a major award,” she said. “I think this crosses all those boxes.” Plus, Aboutaleb added, Knightley, who loves recycling clothes, would also be able to wear this number again in a more casual setting too.

Emma Stone: Aboutaleb selected an Armani Prive look for the “Birdman” actress, who has taken a lot of fashion risks this awards season. “We’ve seen her in tuxedo jackets, we’ve seen her in ball gowns and mini dresses and jumpsuits — she plays it up!” she said. “She’s so good at trying new things that it would be fun to see her in something like this.”

Meryl Streep: For the “Into the Woods” star, Aboutaleb picked a dress that she knows Streep is unlikely to wear — but would be fun to see her in nevertheless. “She played a witch and there’s something witchy about this, but it’s fun to throw some sparkle into the mix and the feathers are really fun,” she said. “It would be nice to see her go for the overall glam look more!”

Eddie Redmayne, Patricia Arquette, J.K. Simmons and Julianne Moore, all of whom were honored at the Golden Globes, also won awards for their work in “The Theory of Everything,” “Boyhood,” “Whiplash” and “Still Alice,” respectively.

However, “Birdman” picked up the best performance by a cast in a motion picture, just a few weeks after it failed to pick up the Best Comedy Golden Globe, which was won by the cast of “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

On the TV side, “Orange Is the New Black” had a big night, winning best comedy series and one of its stars, Ubo Aduba, picking up the best actress in a comedy series award. Cable shows had a big night too, though Viola Davis did win best actress in a drama series for her role in “How to Get Away with Murder.”

Drew Barrymore can’t wait to hit 40.

The actress and mother of two will celebrate her 40th birthday Feb. 22.

“I’m so excited,” Barrymore told E! News at a holiday party for fashion and entertainment website Refinery29, where Barrymore is editor-at-large.

“I finally feel the age that I am and I’ll tell you why—I always felt older than the number I was,” she said. “I was always too mature and adult and raising myself or running a company or I’m only 19 and I’m a homeowner. Forty feels like where I’m at. It makes sense.”

Barrymore is also enjoying married life with husband Will Kopelman and being a mom to their daughters, Olive, 2, and 8-month-old Frankie.

“I’m very happy,” Drew beamed. “Marriage is great and the kids are the best. I know that everyone says you’re supposed to treat your spouse as equal as your kids, but I struggle every day of who I love the most. I love them all!”

‘The Walking Dead’ Still Dead to 2015 Golden Globes: 7 Snubs and Surprises http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/12/the-walking-dead-still-dead-to-2015-golden-globes-7-snubs-and-surprises/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/12/the-walking-dead-still-dead-to-2015-golden-globes-7-snubs-and-surprises/#comments Thu, 11 Dec 2014 17:08:22 +0000 Luchina Fisher http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=322650

Out with the old, in with the new seems to be the theme for this year’s Golden Globe nominations.

Just a day after the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association welcomed newcomers “Jane the Virgin” on CW and “Transparent” on Amazon and left out previous favorites “Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family.”

That’s not all who got snubbed.

2015 Golden Globe Nominations: The Complete List

21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Nominations Complete List

Keep reading to see our list of snubs and surprises:

1. ‘The Walking Dead’

The AMC series remains the most popular show on television, but it might as well be dead to the HFPA, who haven’t thrown the show a bone since it was nominated in 2010 for best TV series, drama.

2. ‘Modern Family’

After four years of love for “Modern Family” and its cast, the Globes have moved on. The show failed to score a single nomination, even though it garnered the most TV nominations from the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday. Even “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the freshman comedy that won best TV series, musical or comedy, and earned a Globe for star Andy Samberg last year, came up empty.

3. ‘Unbroken’

Usually, the Hollywood Foreign Press can’t resist Angelina Jolie. She scored a nomination for the box office bomb “The Tourist” in 2010 and her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” in 2012. But her latest film, “Unbroken,” which opens Christmas Day, failed to score a nomination for best drama or its director, Jolie.

4. Bradley Cooper

“American Sniper” star Bradley Cooper came up empty again today. After being left off Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominees list, he once again missed the mark with the Foreign Press Association. The Clint Eastwood film, which opens Christmas Day, has so far been shut out of the awards race.

5. ‘Interstellar’

Director Christopher Nolan is no stranger to snubs, and once again this year, he got no love for his space epic “Interstellar,” starring last year’s Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. The film was also left out of all the major categories, though it did manage to grab a nomination for best score by Hans Zimmer, which is more than it got from the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday.

6. ‘Selma’

At least “Selma” rebounded well after being excluded from the SAG nominations. Like “American Sniper” and “Unbroken,” the MLK and voting rights biopic, which opens Christmas Day, was not completed in time to get screeners to SAG voters. Not so with the Globes. The film earned a nomination for best motion picture, drama, best director for Ava DuVernay and best actor for star David Oyelowo.

7.  ’Boardwalk Empire’

Unlike other series, which go out with a trove of awards, “Boardwalk Empire,” which ended its fifth and final season in October, came up dry. HBO’s Prohibition era series won for the show and its star Steve Buscemi in 2011 and earned nominations in 2012 and 2013.

James Earl Jones Having ‘Fascinating’ Time in Return to Broadway http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/12/james-earl-jones-having-fascinating-time-in-return-to-broadway/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/12/james-earl-jones-having-fascinating-time-in-return-to-broadway/#comments Fri, 05 Dec 2014 21:18:50 +0000 Enjoli Francis http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=322562

Award-winning actor James Earl Jones, 83, who takes the stage in the play “You Can’t Take it With You” as Grandpa Vanderhof, said it’s “wonderful” to be back on Broadway.

The comedic play, whose cast includes Rose Byrne, Kristine Nielsen, Annaleigh Ashford and Elizabeth Ashley, is about an engaged couple introducing their very different families to each other.

“It is ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ … These families are equal in dignity but not in wealth,” Jones said. “The wealth has set the other family, the boy’s family, apart in a way that’s not all that healthy and Grandpa knows that because he came from that world. … He was very aggressive, making an attempt at Wall St. Here’s a guy who I’ll say … tried then gave it up. But the other family has thrived and … the father of the groom is the epitome of the dignified American. … And he’s got this son. … And my granddaughter’s in love with him.”

A Lifetime of Achievement – but James Earl Jones Isn’t Done Yet

He called the experience “fascinating.”

“Every member of the cast carries the play. There’s no star. It’s not on my shoulders,” Jones said. “It’s on every one of our shoulders, and they do it beautifully. They’re really some sharpshooters.”

Jones, who provided the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies, won the Voice Icon Award from the first-ever Voice Arts Awards in November.

He said Star Wars fans still come by the theater to get autographs.

“I love that they think well of it,” he said. “I’m very proud to have been a part of that. It’s a great cult growing up around the whole — good for George [Lucas] and good for everybody, including the mythologists that inspired George.”

A new Star Wars film is expected out in 2015.

As for Jones, despite all the accolades and achievements, he said he was still the same person who was born in Mississippi and raised on a Michigan farm.

He remembers his grandfather’s advice to take things one step at a time.

“Every production I do is another step. Destiny — I don’t know what that is. … Just the step is what’s important,” he said.  “The journey is what’s important. I consider myself a journeyman actor. I love the phrase.”

Despite recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, Chris Rock remains optimistic about the future, especially for his daughters.

“I mean, I almost cry every day. I drop my kids off and watch them in the school with all these mostly white kids, and I got to tell you, I drill them every day: ‘Did anything happen today? Did anybody say anything?’ They look at me like I am crazy,” the father of two told New York magazine.

“It’s partly generational, but it’s also my kids grew up not only with a black president but with a black secretary of State, a black joint chief of staff, a black attorney general. My children are going to be the first black children in the history of America to actually have the benefit of the doubt of just being moral, intelligent people,” Rock said.

Rock told interviewer Frank Rich that it’s not black people who have progressed so much as whites.

“To say Obama is progress is saying that he’s the first black person that is qualified to be president. That’s not black progress. That’s white progress,” Rock said. “There’s been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years.”

He continued, “There have been smart, educated, beautiful, polite black children for hundreds of years. The advantage that my children have is that my children are encountering the nicest white people that America has ever produced. Let’s hope America keeps producing nicer white people.”

After a grand jury in Missouri declined to bring charges against police officer Darren Wilson last week for the Aug. 9 shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown, Rock took to Twitter to voice his displeasure of the decision.

“A system cannot fail those it was never meant to protect,” he wrote, quoting W.E.B. Du Bois.

Before Mel B married husband Stephen Belafonte, she was in a long relationship with a woman.

“I did have a four-year relationship with a woman,” she told The Guardian. “But I’ve been very happily married for seven years to a penis. Haha! An amazing guy.”

The former Spice Girl’s female love interest happened to be a mom whose children attended the same Los Angeles school as Mel B’s oldest daughter.

This isn’t the first time the “America’s Got Talent” judge, whose real name is Melanie Brown, has admitted to experimenting with the same sex.

“I’ve definitely not been shy or been one to hold back,” the British recording artist shared. “If I wanted to try something, I did. I had a girlfriend. So what?”

But today, the 39-year-old mother of three insists, she’s a happily married woman.

“No, me and my husband are very tight and solid,” she told the U.K. newspaper. “But I will be the first one to compliment a woman, to say to my husband, ‘Oh, my God, look at her legs’; or ‘Doesn’t she look stunning?’ I do think women are gorgeous. Crazy but gorgeous.”

They’re back!

In a new promo for the 2015 Golden Globes, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, returning for their third appearance, joke about what they’ll be wearing for the big night.

In the video, the duo are dressed in formal black outfits, but say they have something else in mind for the Jan. 11 awards.

“Tina, everyone wants to know, who will you be wearing?” Poehler, the star of “Parks and Recreation,” asks her co-host and “30 Rock” alum Fey.

Fey says she’ll be wearing a romper with “cheese” and “ice skates,” while Poehler reveals she’ll be in an “ER bandage dress with stilts by the Ohio Stilt King.”

“That sounds gorgent,” Fey tells her friend.

Enjoy the laughs, because Fey and Poehler will be making their final appearance as hosts of the Globes—or so they say.

“We’re doing it one last time and we’re done,” Fey told Howard Stern on his Sirius XM satellite radio show in October. “We’re both done after this, but it’s good. You don’t want to be a perennial host. It’s a lot of work and you want people to be like, ‘You want to leave the party early!’ You don’t want to be the last one at the party.”

Tori Spelling Describes Hitting ‘Rock Bottom’ in Her Troubled Marriage http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/11/tori-spelling-describes-hitting-rock-bottom-in-her-troubled-marriage/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/11/tori-spelling-describes-hitting-rock-bottom-in-her-troubled-marriage/#comments Tue, 25 Nov 2014 18:02:07 +0000 Luchina Fisher http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=322452 ht tori dr oz kb 141125 16x9 608 Tori Spelling Describes Hitting Rock Bottom in Her Troubled Marriage

The Dr. Oz Show

Tori Spelling has admittedly never handled stress well, but after her recent marital struggles, the reality star says she hit rock bottom, landing in the hospital for two weeks.

“I realize after being in the hospital for two weeks being away from my kids that that was my rock bottom, because they weren’t even fazed by me being in the hospital. They’re used to it. And I don’t want them to grow up thinking mom’s sick, so I need to change,” Spelling told Monday’s “Dr. Oz” show, where she appeared with her husband, Dean McDermott.

Spelling, 41, explained, “Anytime I would have emotional stress, for years, my whole life, I would just repress and keep going and keep going and no one knew, really. And it would just start coming out. I would be sick all the time, sinus, migraines, everything. I don’t want to keep going on like that. I’m at that place where I don’t like the way my kids see me. I don’t like them seeing me as sick.”

In order to change, the mother of four said, she is learning to put herself and her health first.

“My problem is I put everyone before me,” she told the show’s host, Dr. Mehmet Oz. “And I think it really does go back to childhood, not feeling worthy enough that I should be allowed to be taking care of or I should have any worth to even eat, drink, you know, to get to me first. It’s all about my kids, my husband, everyone.”

Spelling’s biggest worry lately has been about her husband, whose infidelity, drug and alcohol use and suicide scare have rocked their marriage.

“I have clinical depression and I want people to know that there’s help out there,” McDermott, 48, told Dr. Oz. “You’re not alone and that’s what I’ve learned through this whole process is I’m not alone with the alcoholism and the drugs and the depression. You can get help.”

Meanwhile, both are working on rebuilding their marriage.

“I’ve asked him a lot,” Spelling said. “I’ve asked him to listen to me, to take care of me, take care of the kids, step up in our family, and he really has. He’s really working on himself and us.”
