At 11 months old, Prince George already has the look of an iconic British leader, just not a royal one, according to his uncle.

During a visit to Chile, Prince Harry compared his nephew’s appearance to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s, according to The Telegraph.

The prince was speaking with Virginia Araya, a presenter for the Chilean national radio station Infinita, when she asked him about the famous royal baby.

“I asked him what George was like. He said: ‘He’s growing up, he is walking and he has big, chubby cheeks. He looks like a young Winston Churchill,” she reportedly said to the Telegraph.

Prince Harry was in Santiago, Chile, at an official celebration for the queen’s birthday.

While it was a day to honor Prince William, who was celebrating his first Father’s Day, his growing son stole the show today, making his first public appearance since the tour last month to Australia and New Zealand, just a month shy of his first birthday.

Kate and Baby George came to cheer on Prince William as he and Prince Harry duked it out on opposite sides of the Jerudong Trophy match at the Cirencester Park Polo Club, raising money for their charities.

George, adorable in a pair of red and white striped overalls and a mini white polo shirt, proved even at an early age he’s a sportsman in the making like his dad.

He was intrigued with a polo mallet. George kept the crowd absorbed, kicking a quilted soccer ball as he was wriggling around the field where his father was on his horse. With the aid of his mother, Prince George proved he’s nearly walking on his own.

The duke and duchess have made no secret the royal heir is a handful. And his growing mobility will mean the couple are in for an even busier home life.

Prince William Calls Son George a ‘Little Bit of a Rascal’ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/08/prince-william-calls-son-george-a-little-bit-of-a-rascal/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/08/prince-william-calls-son-george-a-little-bit-of-a-rascal/#comments Mon, 19 Aug 2013 13:03:44 +0000 Katie Kindelan http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=299083

His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge may be the third in line to the British throne, but when it comes to being a newborn, he’s just like every other baby, according to his dad.

“He wriggles around quite a lot and he doesn’t want to go to sleep that much, which is a little bit of a problem,” Prince William told CNN’s Max Foster in an interview that aired today.  “He’s a little bit of a rascal.”

“He either reminds me of my brother or me when I was younger.  I’m not sure,” William said, referring to his younger brother, Prince Harry.  “He does like to keep having his nappy changed.”

William and his wife, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, both 31, won raves when Prince George was born in July for the down-to-earth way they handled the arrival of their first child.

The couple brought George outside of St. Mary’s Hospital on July 23, the day after his birth, to greet the throngs of media and the public who had been assembled outside the London hospital for weeks clamoring to get the first look at the new royal heir.  The attention, William says, was overwhelming but appreciated.

Prince William, Kate Register George’s Birth

“It’s not somewhere I enjoy being but I know that in the position I’m that’s what’s required of me to do and it’s nice that people want to see George,” William said.  “The thing is, I think I was on such a high anyway, and, so was Catherine, about George that really we were happy to show him off to anyone who wanted to see him.”

“As any new parent knows, you’re only too happy to show off your new child and proclaim that he’s’ the best looking or the best everything,” he said.  “I was just glad he wasn’t screaming his head off the whole way through.”

William knew the media attention around George’s birth would mean that he would face the daunting task of loading his newborn son into the family’s car, worrisome for any new father, before millions of people watching the first glimpse of baby George around the world, and so he prepared.

“Believe me, it wasn’t my first time,” he said of leading the carseat into the car.  “I had to practice.  I really did.  I was terrified that he was going to fall off or it wasn’t going to close properly.  I had actually practiced with that seat, but only once before.”

William then surprised everyone by getting behind the wheel of the car himself, eschewing the royal tradition of relying on a chauffeur to escort his family of three back to their home at Kensington Palace.

“I think driving your son and your wife away from hospital when you’ve just had a [boy] was really important to me and I don’t like fuss so I just did it myself,” William explained.  “Where I can be I’m as independent as I want to be, and the same as Catherine and Harry.

“We’ve all grown up differently to other generations and I very much feel that if I can do it myself I want to do it myself.  There are times when you can’t do it yourself and the system takes over or it’s appropriate to do things differently,” he said.  “I’m just doing it the way I know and if it’s the right way then brilliant, if it’s the wrong way then I try to do it better.  I’m reasonably headstrong about what I believe and what I go for and I’ve got fantastic people around me who give me great support and advice.”

William took a two-week paternity leave from his duties as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force (RAF) when George was born.  He made his first official royal engagement last week at a county fair in Anglesey, Wales, where he is based, and is now looking forward to escaping overnight baby duty.

“As a few fathers might know, I’m actually quite looking forward to going back to work [to] get some sleep,” he said.  “I’m just hoping the first few shifts I go back on don’t have any night jobs.”

William is also thinking about the future for his son, who, like him, will carry the weight of the British monarchy on his shoulders, but not too far into the future.

“At the moment the only legacy I want to pass on to him is sleep more and maybe not change his nappy quite so many times,” William said.

Proving he really is a modern-day royal and Renaissance dad, William says it was him, not Kate, who changed George’s first diaper, even if it wasn’t necessarily by choice.

“I did the first nappy,” William said.  “I wasn’t allowed to get away with it. I had every midwife staring at me going, ‘You do it. You do it.’”

“I think the last few weeks for me have been just a very different emotional experience, something I never thought I would feel myself, and I find, again it’s only been a short period, but a lot of things affect me differently now,” he said.

Foster’s full interview with Prince William will be aired in an upcoming one-hour special, Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope, on CNN and CNN International on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 p.m. ET.

ABC News’ Joshua Hoyos reports:

Trading in diapers and baby bottles for a polo pony, the world got a glimpse of Prince William in public for the first time since the birth of his son, Prince George.

On Saturday, Prince William participated in a charity match with Prince Harry as he finishes his paternity leave.

Although Prince George was not in sight, he was not out of mind, as Prince William told reporters that his mind was more focused on the future king than the game at hand.

“I was in baby mode out there, thinking about nappies, I wasn’t really in the zone,” he told reporters.

The Duke of Cambridge is completing his paternity leave on Monday and will report back to his air force duties in Wales.

On Friday, the palace formally registered the birth of the third in line to the throne.

It’s official. Prince William and Kate Middleton have registered the birth of their son, His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have formally registered the birth of Prince George,” Kensington Palace said today. “The Duke of Cambridge signed the birth register at Kensington Palace this morning, witnessed by a Registrar from Westminster Register Office.”

William and Kate’s occupations are listed on the document as Prince of the United Kingdom and Princess of the United Kingdom, respectively.

Prince George was born July 22 at 4:24 p.m. London time. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, according to an official announcement from Kensington Palace four hours after the birth.

The world got its first glimpse of the little prince the next day when the family departed from St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing. The day-old baby was in his mother’s arms swaddled in a white blanket and poked his hand out, as if to greet the world.

“It’s very emotional,” Kate said. “It’s such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like.”

ABC News’ Bethany Owings and Taylor Behrendt report:

Kate Middleton is the picture of perfection for post-pregnancy.

“I think what Kate has done for new moms has really given them a tremendous gift,” thebump.com editor Lori Richmond told ABC News.

Photos of Radiant Kate Showing Off Royal Baby Boy

The duchess glowed as she debuted her little prince outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London earlier this week, and moms around the world noticed that post-baby bump she proudly showed off.

“Even the way she was holding her hands, cradling her belly, really framing it, I think that was shocking for some people to see, but it was wonderful for people to see because that’s what moms really look like after they’ve given birth,” Richmond said.

Everything from the style of Kate’s dress to the way she carried herself showed confidence, a modern approach notably different from Diana’s famous green moo moo.

Many new moms feel a lot of pressure to lose the weight, partly fueled by a tabloid culture that puts every Hollywood mom’s body under the microscope after she has a baby.

“I think the pressures to immediately bounce back after birth are out of control today,” ABC News senior medical contributor Dr. Jennifer Ashton said. “After delivery, it takes a while for that muscle to contract and that process takes a couple weeks.”

ABC News’ Bianna Golodryga ventured out in New York City with her son, Jake, to find out what moms really think of Kate’s “mummy tummy.”

“I feel good that she showed it because that’s the reality,” one mom in Central Park  said.

“I think it’s a very cool thing that she did that rather than hiding it,” said another at Kidville, a center that provides educational classes and programs for children.

What Does the Prince’s Name Mean?

The duchess has turned the focus to the baby, rather than the bump.

“That’s really where the time should be spent,” Richmond said. “Now worrying about how you look and not succumbing to that pressure to be so perfect so quickly.”

These days, Prince William and Kate Middleton are spending all their time with their newborn son, but when it’s time for their first night away from the baby, Prince Harry joked that they’re going to need to write a pretty big check.

“It’s fantastic to have another addition to the family,” Harry, 27, said today at an event for his charity, Sentebale. “I only hope my brother knows how expensive my babysitting charges are.”

Queen Elizabeth Meets the Royal Baby

Will and Kate, both 31, welcomed George Alexander Louis on Monday and, since then, the new family has gone to Bucklebury to stay near Middleton’s parents.

“He’s about that long and about that wide,” joked Harry when asked about his impression of his nephew. “When I saw him, he was crying his eyes out like all babies do, I suppose.”

Upon introducing baby George to the public, in fact, Prince William said, “He’s got a good pair of lungs. That’s for sure!”

Though Harry wasn’t sure who in the family the baby seems to take after – “He’s about four days old, so I think you can judge that one by yourself. I have no idea,” he said – he’s certain about what his role in his nephew’s life will be.

“To be sure he has a good upbringing, keep him out of harm’s way – and make sure he has fun,” Harry said. “The rest of it I leave to the parents.”

The name of the royal prince has been announced: George Alexander Louis. While the happy couple haven’t publicly said why the name was chosen, royal watchers see plenty of meaning in the name of the future monarch.

Prince William and Kate Middleton chose to stick with tradition rather than name the royal heir something with a more modern twist, which doesn’t surprise former press secretary to the queen, Dickie Arbiter, one bit.

“They all have been used regularly in royal circles,” Arbiter told GoodMorningAmerica.com. “They’re all pretty traditional. They’ve gone for traditional names, rather than 21st century names.”

When asked if Arbiter believed the queen had any influence over the naming process, he replied, “The queen probably had no influence whatsoever. It was a complete decision made my William. He’s very headstrong. Yes, he will pass on the information, but as far as these children’ s names, it was up to he and Catherine.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William Name the Baby

As for George, there isn’t much of a surprise here, as the queen’s father is George the Sixth and her grandfather is George the Fifth.

“The queen’s uncle is also a George. It’s a fairly well-used name,” said Arbiter. “Edward the Seventh’s second son is a George. George has been used quite regularly through the generations.”

Alexander is also steeped with tradition amongst the royals.

“As far as Alexander is concerned, Alexandra has been used quite frequently. The queen is Alexandra,” Arbiter explained. “One of George the First’s daughter’s was an Alexandra. And one of Edward the Seventh’s son’s was Alexander.”

Keep in mind, however, that we do not yet know what the duke and duchess will be calling the baby on a daily basis.

“I think we could be looking at a King Alexander,” said Jennifer Griffin, author of “Bring Back Beatrice: 1,108 Baby Names with Meaning, Character and a Little Bit of Attitude.” “But we also don’t know what they’re going to call the kid yet. Alexander is an exciting possibility. If they call him Alexander, it’s like Alexander the Great.”

George may be the more traditional approach, as Six King George’s have worn the crown. And if down the line when the newest royal addition takes the throne and decides upon being called King George, he will be the first since 1952.

“George is favored by leaders here and there, but it’s also got a little bit of a dork factor about it,” Griffin said. “We’ve traditionally thought of it as a dorky name, but as names like Henry and Edward are trending up, so will George.”

The name George has pastoral backgrounds, says Griffin, relating to farm work, while the other two names, Alexander and Louis, are much more warrior oriented.

“Alexander is defender of man, or defender of people,” she explained. “And Louis is the same as warrior.”

Click here for full coverage of the royal baby.

Of the three names, Louis is the most shocking choice, although still not particularly out of the ordinary for the royal family.

“The queen’s third son is a Louis, Prince William is a Louis, Princess Anne is a Louise, and that really is sort of the appearance of that name,” said Arbiter.

But Griffin found Louis to be “a real wild card.”

“I was shocked by Louis because it’s so French,” she said.

No matter how you interpret it, Prince William and Kate Middleton are delighted with their new bundle of joy, whose official title is His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis,” the palace said.

The baby boy was born Monday at 4:24 p.m. London time. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, according to an official announcement from Kensington Palace four hours after the birth.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave the world its much-anticipated view of her newborn son when she left St. Mary’s hospital in London one day after giving birth.

With the tiny prince bundled up, Kate and her husband, Prince William, were relaxed and composed as they shared their joy with the world. Royal watchers were amazed by Kate’s resilience.

“Coming out of the hospital a day after having given birth for any mother is an immense amount of responsibility,” said Rosie Pope, contributing editor to Parents magazine.

ABC News’ Dr. Jennifer Ashton agreed.

“Twenty-four hours post-partum you’re exhausted, weak, emotional. Getting out of bed is an incredible feat,” she said.

The new parents made their appearance on the same steps of St. Mary’s where Princess Diana and her then-husband, Prince Charles, showed the world its first glimpse of William 31 years ago.

Ingrid Seward, a royal biographer, recalled Diana’s state of mind when she left the hospital after William’s birth in June 1981.

“Diana told me when she stepped out there with William … she was so overwhelmed, so nervous, that when they actually got into the car and drove around the camera, she just burst into tears,” Seward said.

Kate herself acknowledged the enormity of the moment Tuesday when she told reporters the birth was, “very emotional.”

The comparison between Princess Diana and Duchess Kate, 31, was inevitable.

What’s the Baby Prince’s Zodiac Sign?

For example, when Diana left the hospital, she wore a loose teal dress that was covered in white polka dots. Kate also wore a polka-dot dress: white dots on a cornflower-blue background.

Another comparison that has been drawn is between William and his father, Prince Charles.

When Charles and Diana left the hospital, Charles was holding their son, and then he gave him to Diana. When William and Kate emerged Tuesday from St. Mary’s, Kate was holding the yet-to-be-named baby and she turned him over to her husband.

“The moment Kate handed over their new baby boy to William was such a significant moment,” Pope of Parents magazine said. “You know she was saying that both of us are parents, and that is the way they are going to go forth.”

Prince William also proved he is a hands-on dad by strapping the baby into his car seat himself and then getting behind the wheel of the family’s car as they drove to their Kensington Palace home.

“I think William handled his exit from the hospital like a prince,” Pope said.

When Prince William and Kate Middleton emerged from St. Mary’s Hospital today to present their newborn son to the world, the Duchess of Cambridge seemed to be paying a small tribute to the late Princess Diana in her wardrobe choice.

Holding the tiny Prince of Cambridge, whose name has yet to be announced, in her arms, Kate walked out of the Lindo Wing of the London hospital wearing a simple pale, baby blue dress covered in white polka dots.

According to Glamour UK, the dress was by designer Jenny Packham.

Thoughts of some observers immediately jumped back to that day 31 years ago in June 1982, when it was Prince Charles and Diana who came out of the same hospital wing, holding baby William.

On that day, Diana wore a teal, flowy dress, also covered in white polka dots.

In line with royal tradition, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of the hospital doors to the wild cheers of the crowd gathered outside and posed for photographs.

Like his father did before him, William took his son from Kate and held him while addressing the crowd.

However, unlike Charles and Diana, who only lingered briefly before getting straight into a car and leaving the hospital, William and Kate took a few minutes to approach the crowd and answer a few questions. Both were all smiles.

Kate said the experience has been “very emotional,” adding that any parent would “know what this feeling feels like.”

With Charles and Diana, the couple took no questions, made no remarks or jokes, only smiled and then off they went. The whole thing lasted just over a minute.

But William cracked a few jokes to the press, who had been camped outside of the hospital for days, saying that his young son “has got a good pair of lungs on him” and that the baby had “way more [hair] than me, thank God.”

In 1982, Diana had opted to hold baby William while she and Charles sat in the back seat of a car with a driver, rather than putting the newborn in a car seat.

But minutes after William and Kate addressed the crowd, the new parents came back out with the royal baby in a car seat. William got in the driver’s seat of a black car and Kate got in the back with the baby as they drove off.

Time will tell how closely William and Kate will follow Diana and Charles’ lead when it comes to raising the newest British royal heir.
