ABC News’ Joshua Hoyos reports:

Six years after her death, Anna Nicole Smith is being immortalized in a new Lifetime movie called “Anna Nicole” debuting Saturday.

At first glance, 27-year-old Agnes Bruckner, who started acting at the age of 11 as a regular on the daytime drama “The Bold and Beautiful,” seems like a long shot to play the platinum blonde temptress.

“She went through extensive hair and makeup and then there was a whole process of prosthetics,” Entertainment Weekly writer Lindzi Scharf told ABC News.

Bruckner, who is much smaller than the voluptuous Anna Nicole Smith, reportedly had to undergo four hours of hair, makeup and prosthetics with three people each morning before shooting. To pull off the look, the natural brunette bleached her hair and added extensions, required neck, cheek and breast prosthetics, and to capture that Marilyn Monroe-like look, she donned wigs.

“The moment I saw her, I didn’t recognize her,” said Deborah Everton, the costume designer for the film. “I was wondering, ‘Who is this?’ …  And then I realized it was Agnes.”

Side by side images of Bruckner compared to iconic images of Smith are nearly identical.

“She really became Anna Nicole for this role,” said Scharf.

Bruckner says the role was more than just perfecting the “look” but also inhabiting Smith’s persona.

“I became really protective of Anna Nicole,” Bruckner told Entertainment Tonight. “And I think we did her justice.”

‘Devious Maids’ Criticized for Portrayals of Hispanics http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/devious-maids-criticized-for-portrayals-of-hispanics/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/devious-maids-criticized-for-portrayals-of-hispanics/#comments Fri, 21 Jun 2013 12:18:10 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=293876 ABC News’ Daisha Riley reports:

“Devious Maids,” a new television series produced by actress Eva Longoria, hasn’t even premiered yet but it’s already drawing heavy criticism from people who say it shows Latinas in demeaning stereotypical roles.

“There probably wasn’t a Latina in the country who didn’t initially roll her eyes of ‘oh great, here we go again. Another Latina character that’s a maid …,’” Damarys Ocana, executive editor of Latina magazine, said, adding that people are passionate about how Latinos are portrayed on TV and film.

Online the reaction was mixed. Some people have taken to Twitter to express their outrage.

Wrote Twitter user @owlbedamned: “#DeviousMaids: Because there aren’t enough stereotypes about overly dramatic Latinas.”

Added user @GeekChicStar: “Am I the only Latina who thinks “Devious Maids” is degrading? …”

But not everyone was panning the production. Twitter user @BoofaceVeeAAy wrote: “Thank goodness for early premieres on demand, pretty good show #deviousmaids.

And @tealetuesday added: “Watching #DeviousMaids and I gotta admit I’m liking it!”

“Devious Maids” tells the story of five Latina maids who face wrath and condescension from their wealthy employers in Beverly Hills.

Ahead of the show’s upcoming premiere Sunday night on Lifetime, the “Devious Maids” cast, as well as Longoria and executive producer Marc Cherry — who created the hit series “Desperate Housewives” — have been addressing the criticism.

Longoria said critics have failed to acknowledge the show’s groundbreaking achievement: that this is the first English-language drama ever to star five Latina actresses.

“When we get any sort of backlash, sort of ‘they are playing the stereotypical maids,’ my immediate response is that ‘so you’re telling me those stories aren’t worth telling?’ Those people are lesser than?’” Longoria said in an online video promoting the show.

Roselyn Sanchez, whose onscreen credits include the film “Rush Hour 2″ and the TV series “Without a Trace,” agrees.

“We don’t think that (by) playing maids we’re being demeaning to the Latino culture,” she told Maximo TV.

Added her co-star, Ana Ortiz: “The more that we talk about it, the more people are aware of it, the better.”

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has been accused of typecasting women of color.

Actress Octavia Spencer, who is African-American, won an Academy award last year for her portrayal of a maid in the film “The Help,” but some people thought the role perpetuated antiquated stereotypes dating to as far back as the film “Gone With the Wind.”

Hattie McDaniel made history as the first black woman to win an Oscar for playing a maid a named Mammy in that 1939 film, and she spent much of the rest of her career essentially reprising that role.

Eva Longoria, Marc Cherry and Lifetime did not reply to requests for comment from ABC News.

New Reality Series Features ‘Naked and Afraid’ Contestants http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/new-reality-series-features-naked-and-afraid-contestants/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/new-reality-series-features-naked-and-afraid-contestants/#comments Mon, 17 Jun 2013 13:41:19 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=293407

ABC News’ Suzanne Yeo reports:

Imagine being dropped into one of the most remote regions on earth with a complete stranger, forced to live off the land in brutal conditions totally naked.

That’s the premise of Discovery Channel’s new reality series called “Naked and Afraid,” which will pair stripped down male and female strangers and leave them stranded in a remote area with no food and no water.

The couple will be left in the wild for 21 days with nothing but their determination and survival skills.  Think Adam and Eve meets “Survivor” meets “Castaway.”

“Survival of the fittest” takes on a whole new meaning with this new reality series where there’s no prize for the contestants. The show’s producers say the naked castaways are simply doing this for the experience.

“It’s pushing the boundaries of the survival genre. This is the most authentic survival show you’re going to see,” said Jay Renfroe, executive producer of “Naked and Afraid.”

Each pair is given a basic map and small cameras, which were rolling at all times. In addition to that footage, a four-person camera crew tracks each couple at all times.

“Naked and Afraid” is the latest entry in the dog-eat-dog world of reality television where shows are pushing the envelope on what viewers can stomach. Some critics wonder if reality TV producers are testing the bounds of good taste.

“Reality television seemingly is becoming more and more and more outrageous each season,” media expert and author Michael Levine said.

“Naked & Afraid” premieres June 23 on Discovery.

Kim Kardashian Gives Birth to Baby Girl

For a family that is notoriously open about what seems like all aspects of their personal lives on camera, the birth of Kardashian and West’s daughter has the family surprisingly tight lipped.

The whole family took to Twitter to wish the dads in their lives a happy Father’s Day — including Bruce Jenner and Scott Disick.

But Kris Jenner noted the special significance of this Father’s Day for new parents, tweeting “HAPPY FATHERS DAY @kanyewest !!!!!!”

A Manhattan real estate broker featured on the hit reality show “Million Dollar Listing New York” was spotted on a recent episode digitally enhancing promotional photos of a $7 million home.

During a May episode, Luis Ortiz, 26, and his brother used Photoshop to alter promotional photos of a five-bedroom home in Manhattan’s swanky Greenwich Village by adding marble countertops, hardwood floors and upgrading the kitchen.

The digital makeover caught the eye of the New York State Department, which has launched an investigation into Ortiz’s business practices.

“I know this is a little white lie, but come on. A harmless lie is not going to kill anybody,” Ortiz says in the episode.

The reality show, which airs on Bravo, gives millions of viewers a glimpse inside the jaw-dropping wealthy world of New York City real estate.

Brian Lewis is also a real estate broker in the hotly competitive New York City real estate market. Lewis, an executive vice president at Halstead Property, draws a line between how the industry really works and what’s portrayed on reality television.

“Just because you’re on TV, and just because you’re on a reality show doesn’t make you impervious to our rules and regulations, and the consumer has to be aware,” he said. “This is a soap opera, and I’ve got to admit, it’s pretty compelling stuff. But, America, this is not how brokerage happens. That’s how good TV happens.”

Ortiz addressed the incident in a blog post posted on Bravo’s website, titled, “Falling Short of My Beliefs.” Ortiz concluded that it “was not the best of my moments,” but said he doesn’t regret it because it was a learning experience.

“By doing what I did I learned what not to do in the future and that lesson is worth having done what I did. Sometimes we’re told what not do, but it is only after we go through it ourselves that we then understand why it shouldn’t have been done. That’s when a real lesson is learned,” he wrote.

Ortiz works for the Manhattan-based real estate firm Keller Williams Realty.

“Boy Meets World” was the tale of a boy meeting a friend, then meeting a girl.

The popular coming-of-age sitcom ran for seven seasons on ABC through 2000, showing the exploits of Cory, Shawn, Will, Topanga and their families and friends. And, of course, there was Mr. Feeney.

The series  captured the voice of the pre-cellphone generation of the 1990s and helped countless teens deal with the awkwardness of their high school years.

Thirteen years after leaving the air, the gang, including show creator Michael Jacobs, got together again at the ATX Television Festival last week in Austin.

Boy Meets World’ Stars Reunite

Ben Savage (Cory Matthews), Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), Matthew Lawrence (Shawn’s brother, Jack Hunter), Lily Nicksay (Cory’s sister, Morgan), Trina McGee (Angela Moore), Betsy Randle (Cory’s mom, Amy), Maitland Ward (Rachel McGuire) and Jacobs sat down for a chat with “Good Morning America” correspondent Rachel Smith to reminisce about the show.

A few beloved cast members were notably absent: William Daniels’ character Mr. Feeny and Danielle Fishel‘s character, Topanga Lawrence (a big cardboard cutout sat in for her).

“Who dated behind the scenes?” Smith asked, adding that there were rumors that Savage and Fishel had dated in real life. Their characters, Cory and Topanga, fell in love and eventually tied the knot.

“She’s always been a wonderful friend.  I love Danielle to death.  That’s all I can say,” Savage, 32, replied.

‘Boy Meets World’: Where Are They Now?

There might have been no news about off-screen relationships, but the character Shawn definitely had a romance with his hair.

Strong, who played Shawn, said his hair had to be straightened.

“Yes, they used a curling iron. I looked like a Muppet, let’s be honest,” Strong, 33, said.

His character, a notorious ladies’ man, fell for Angela, played by Trina McGee-Davis.

“It was a lot of controversy at the time, you know, because we really didn’t mention the fact that I was black and he was white,” McGee-Davis, 43, said of the TV relationship.

Rowan Blanchard Cast in ‘Boy Meets World’ Spinoff

Savage said the show “touched on themes that people could relate to: relationships, growing up. It really sparked something in people.”

The youngest cast member was Nicksay, who played Morgan, Cory’s original little sister.

“I feel like I have a foot in both worlds, kind of.  A part of a show, but also an audience member,” Nicksay, 25, said.

“It’s just a wonderful legacy.”

That legacy was built in part by Mr. Feeney, played by Daniels. Daniels’ character was revered for his life lessons.

Daniels was “very proper … the cast always believed that Bill was British,” Jacobs said, prompting laughter from the wider group.

Daniels was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“Boy Meets World” welcomed fresh faces in later seasons, including Shaw’s brother, Jack, and Rachel, the lady torn between Eric and Jack.

“It was really tough for me,” Maitland Ward, 36, who played Rachel, said. “The triangle between them was so much fun.”

The group laughed as they looked back on their time together, but they’re also looking ahead to the pilot of “Girl Meets World,” the highly anticipated Disney Channel spinoff that follows the life of Cory and Topanga’s 12-year-old daughter, Riley.

Cory and Topanga are the only characters who’ll appear in the spinoff, but Jacobs said the show would figure out a way to have other characters from the original appear in “Girl Meets World.”

Oscar Winner Rita Moreno: ‘I’m the Happiest Hispanic I’ve Ever Met’ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/oscar-winner-rita-moreno-im-the-happiest-hispanic-ive-ever-met/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/oscar-winner-rita-moreno-im-the-happiest-hispanic-ive-ever-met/#comments Fri, 07 Jun 2013 21:27:51 +0000 Dan Harris http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=292788 ht rita moreno oscar kb 130607 wblog Oscar Winner Rita Moreno: Im the Happiest Hispanic Ive Ever Met

Before Jennifer Lopez and Sophia Vergara, there was Rita Moreno.

The Hispanic heartthrob from “West Side Story” is one of the few human beings ever to win an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy. And later this month, she will be inducted into the American Songbook Hall of Fame.

“I’m astonished,” she told ABC News. “I feel very honored.”

At 81, Moreno still has the moves and the mental agility of someone decades younger.

“I wake up humming,” she told ABC News recently at her home in Berkeley, Calif. “This is the prime of my life at 81. I am the happiest Hispanic I’ve ever met. Truly. I’m a very, very happy woman.”

Moreno currently appears with Fran Drescher in TV Land’s “Happily Divorced” and just finished a movie.  The autobiography she’s written, “Rita Moreno: A Memoir,” tells an extraordinary immigrant story.

Her mother, who gave birth to her at the age of 17, brought Moreno to New York from Puerto Rico when Moreno was 5. Her mother worked in a sweatshop while Moreno struggled to adjust.

“I was not thrilled,” she said. “It was cold. It was really gray. It was grimy. There was nothing about it [the city] to make me think that this was going to be a happy life. … It was a shock. I was not happy. I didn’t speak English.”

When she turned 17, she moved to Hollywood and signed a seven-year contract with MGM.

“It was obvious that if you were a Hispanic person, you got called all these terrible names,” she said. “The last thing I wanted in the world to be was to be a Puerto Rican girl.

“There were no role models then for me, so I wanted to be Elizabeth Taylor …  Lana Turner,” she added. “I didn’t like being Hispanic. I feel sad about it because it was so futile. I wasted a lot of time trying to be what I wasn’t.”

She said studio bosses never let her forget her heritage, however. The only roles she got were as minorities – Polynesians, Arabs, American Indians, East Indians.

“I had to invent, for myself, an accent. I decided to call it ‘the universal ethnic accent,’” she said. “It’s so nice to be able to laugh at that now.”

The turning point came in 1961, when “West Side Story” happened. She also joined the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“I really became very proud of being a Hispanic,” Moreno said.

The streets of Spanish Harlem in New York erupted when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress.

“When I got that Oscar, I said to myself: ‘OK … this is it. I’m not going to do those demeaning roles anymore,’” she said. “I didn’t do a film for seven years after ‘West Side Story,’ and the Oscar and the Golden Globe.”

She eventually did more movies, branched out into television and fell into some high-profile romances with Marlon Brando and even Elvis.

Nowadays, she said, she has no plans to slow down.

“I have it all,” she said. “I have my daughter, my two grandsons, whom I worship. I have a career that’s still going on. … Who could ask for more?”

Kids of the ’90s, rejoice! The cast of “Boy Meets World” reunited at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, today. That’s right. Best friends Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter smiled on the red carpet like it was 1999.

Ben Savage (Cory Matthews), Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), Matthew Lawrence (Shawn’s brother, Jack Hunter), Lily Nicksay (Cory’s sister, Morgan), Trina McGee (Angela Moore), Betsy Randle (Cory’s mom, Amy), Maitland Ward (Rachel McGuire), and creator Michael Jacobs attended, while a few beloved cast members were notably absent: William Daniels’ character Mr. Feeny and Danielle Fishelle‘s character, Topanga Lawrence.

The hit comedy, centered on Cory Matthews and the problems he faces with friends and family, ran from 1993 to 2000 on Friday nights on ABC, and helped countless teens deal the awkwardness of their high school years.

“Boy Meets World” has had a revival in the last year with the announcement that a Disney Channel spinoff series, “Girl Meets World,” is in the works. The show will center on Riley, the 13-year-old daughter of Topanga and Savage’s character, Corey Matthews.

While you wait, check out what the cast has been up to since “Boy Meets World” went off the air.

‘Wheel of Fortune’ $1 Million Win ‘Felt Like a Dream’ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/wheel-of-fortune-1-million-win-felt-like-a-dream/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/wheel-of-fortune-1-million-win-felt-like-a-dream/#comments Mon, 03 Jun 2013 16:35:50 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=292190

When guessing the final puzzle with just four letters on the board got tough for “Wheel of Fortune” contestant Autumn Erhard, she thought of what else was tough in her life.

“I knew it was ‘tough,’” Erhard said today on “Good Morning America” of the first word in the puzzle.  “I was just like, ‘What could be tough?  What could be tough?’  I workout.  A workout.”

Putting those two words – “tough” and “workout” – together and saying them aloud to “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak made the 30-year-old from Laguna Niguel, Calif., a millionaire.

“It felt like I was in a dream. It was so surreal,” Erhard said. “It felt like I kind of blacked out.”

With the win on last Thursday’s show, Erhard became only the second contestant in the show’s history to win the $1 million prize.  To win the money, Erhard had to land on the one million dollar grand prize wedge during the show, solve that puzzle,  make it to the Bonus Round without hitting bankrupt, spin the wheel and land on the million-dollar card (the bonus wheel has 24 slots with prize cards) and then solve the final puzzle in the Bonus Round.

Erhard’s big win came last Thursday, May 30, during the show’s “Celebrating 30″ theme week to celebrate the game show’s 30th season.  She was a part of the week because she is 30 years old.

Though the show aired last week, it was actually filmed in February, meaning Erhard had to keep her secret from family and friends for more than three months.  Her parents and her fiance, who were present in the audience, were the only people who knew she won.

“When we would get together Sundays for dinner we’d be able to talk about it, let it out,” she said of the stress of keeping her win a secret.

Now that the secret is out, Erhard, an animal pharmaceutical sales rep, can plan her wedding to her fiancé, Joey, with a new budget in mind.

“There’s a lot less stress,” she said.  “We definitely want to travel a bit and just kind of prepare for life and kids.”

‘All in the Family’ Star Jean Stapleton Dies at 90 http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/all-in-the-family-star-jean-stapleton-dies-at-90/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/06/all-in-the-family-star-jean-stapleton-dies-at-90/#comments Sat, 01 Jun 2013 21:40:43 +0000 Alexis Shaw http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=292084

Jean Stapleton, the actress best known for her role as Archie Bunker’s wife Edith in the groundbreaking 1970s television series “All in the Family” died of natural causes at her home in New York City on Friday. She was 90.

Stapleton’s son, John Putch, confirmed his mother’s death to ABC News.

“Being the children of a beloved Mother on Television means sharing the spirit of who JEAN STAPLETON was with her friends and fans. It is with great love and heavy hearts that we say farewell to our collective Mother, with a capital M. Her devotion to her craft and her family taught us all great life lessons,” John Putch and his sister Pamela Putch said in a statement released today.

Despite a successful acting career, Stapleton did not attain fame until she was nearly 50 years old when she took on the role of “dingbat” Edith Bunker, softening Carroll O’Connor’s bigoted, brash Archie in the CBS series produced by Norman Lear. Stapleton won three Emmys for her portrayal.

“The benign, compassionate presence she developed made my egregious churl bearable,” O’Connor wrote of Stapleton in his 1998 autobiography.

When the series wrapped in 1979, Stapleton moved on to new roles in television and in film, most notably for her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in 1982′s “Eleanor, First Lady of the World,” for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Stapleton was married to William Putch, a producer/director of the Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville, Pa., where she appeared for many season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He died in 1993.

Stapleton is survived by her daughter, Pamela Putch, and her son, John Putch.
