A woman hit a home run when her family’s collection of professional baseball cards and some letters  received an insurance valuation of at least $1 million during a taping of “Antiques Roadshow.”

The woman’s name was not released because of security reasons. The collection was part of a family heirloom passed down through five generations to her by her great-great-grandmother.

Leila Dunbar, an “Antiques Roadshow” appraiser, said she knew “immediately” that the collection was special.

“This is not your run-of-the-mill, 1980s, 1990s Topps that come through your door. … You have the pioneers here of professional baseball,” Dunbar said.

The woman’s great-great-grandmother ran a boarding home in Boston in the 1870s, when the Red Sox baseball team known as the Red Stockings housed its players there.

The cards were kept in pristine condition — so rare experts didn’t believe they still existed — but the grand slam was a letter written to the landlady by three Hall of Famers about how they missed her cooking.

Among the cards was one for Albert Spalding of Spalding sporting goods fame.

“Back in 1871, [Spalding] was a fantastic pitcher with the Boston Red Stockings. In 1889, he led a tour of the first baseball team around the world,” Dunbar said.

The woman had turned down an offer of $5,000 previously, on a hunch that the collection was worth way more. And she was right.

Dunbar said the woman was overwhelmed but had said she did not plan to sell and wanted to keep it in the family for generations to come.

The collection was brought to an “Antiques Roadshow” taping Saturday in New York City and will be featured on an edition of the PBS series.

“In the 19 years I have been on the ‘Antiques Roadshow’ … this archive was by far the most exciting that I’ve ever seen. And the story was fascinating,” Dunbar said. “It goes to show that even in 2014, that there can be great finds in anyone’s attic or cellar.”

New Show Explores Shocking Extreme Parenting Techniques http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/08/new-show-explores-shocking-extreme-parenting-techniques/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/08/new-show-explores-shocking-extreme-parenting-techniques/#comments Fri, 01 Aug 2014 12:32:13 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=320646

ABC News’ Linsey Davis and Bethany Owings report:

No one ever said parenting was easy, but these families think they’ve got it all figured out.

Meet the offspring of parents with off-the-wall child-rearing techniques in Bravo’s latest docuseries, “Extreme Guide to Parenting.”

From “hypno-parenting,” to helicopter and conscious attachment parenting, to push parenting where their child is pushed to be the best, the nine admittedly eccentric households all insist their alternative parenting techniques are the best and that everyone else has it wrong.

The families range from the woman who breastfeeds her school-age child and refuses to vaccinate, to the overbearing Los Angeles gay dads who won’t leave their toddler’s side for a second. And then there’s the family that is adventurous and minimalist, living such a nomadic lifestyle that they don’t inhabit a house but choose to live in their car.

“We may see a family who’s making a choice and it may change the way you think about it, and I think that’s what makes it interesting to viewers,” Maggie Furlong, TV editor at Yahoo, told ABC News.

The families admitted they have unconventional styles of parenting, like the family that punishes their children with physical activities like planks, push-ups and wall sits, or the parents who insist their son plays five sports, knows the United States presidents and can write his name – all at the age of 4.

While it may be television gold, some say this form of reality TV exploits children.

“No. 1, it pits parents against each other,” said Ericka Souter, editor at TheStir.com. “No. 2, it seems less about the children and more about parents. And No. 3, it’s making legitimate parenting choices kind of like a joke.”

No matter how you look at it, they’re taking child-rearing to a whole new level.

One of the funniest men in television, Joel McHale, shared some exciting news about his show, “Community,” this morning on “GMA LIVE!”

“It is coming to Yahoo,” he told host Ginger Zee.

But that’s not what McHale is most excited about for the upcoming sixth season that is launching on the new platform.

“We can swear now, and a lot of nudity,” he joked.

On a more serious note, McHale explained what Dan Harmon, the show’s creator, thinks about “Community” airing on Yahoo TV.

“‘People will now watch the show exactly how they always did,’” he said of Harmon’s thinking. “It has a huge presence on the internet. Our fans are very young, they’re powerful, they’re strong. They’re nerds in a wonderful way.”

The sixth season of “Community” will air “in about six to eight months,” said McHale.

Tune in for more viral moments every weekday on ” GMA LIVE! ” at 9 a.m. ET.

The ‘Facts of Life’ Cast Reunite in Hallmark Movie, Receive Special Message http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/the-facts-of-life-cast-reunite-in-hallmark-movie-receive-special-message/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/the-facts-of-life-cast-reunite-in-hallmark-movie-receive-special-message/#comments Wed, 16 Jul 2014 15:59:54 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=320408

They grew up before our eyes in the iconic 1980s show, “The Facts of Life,” about four boarding school friends navigating their way through adolescence.

Lisa Whelchel played the popular Blair Warner and Kim Fields was the spunky Tootie Ramsey.

Now the two are reuniting for Hallmark Channel’s new romantic comedy, “For Better or For Worse,” about giving love a second chance and the actresses couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunity to work together again.

“It was very much like riding a bike,” Kim Fields, 45, explained on “Good Morning America” today. “You know, Lisa’s just a wonderfully talented woman, plain and simple. And so to be able to work with her again, and we’re grown now so it’s not like there was a whole like of sameness from working together when you’re younger, but [it was]certainly very comfortable.”

And Whelchel agrees, saying that when she found out Fields was being cast to play her friend, she jokingly replied, ‘Ok, I’ll do that for free.’”

“I was sent the script and I’ve been sent a lot of scripts to do some family-friendly shows or faith-based and they’re sometimes so cheesy,” said Whelchel, 51. “But this one was actually really cute and I thought, ‘Yeah, I’d like to be part of this,’ and not hit you over the head with some crazy moral, it’s just great entertainment, fun, romantic comedy.”

Catching Up with Kim Fields for the Holidays

The ladies were even surprised with a message from beloved former cast member, Charlotte Rae, who played the infamous Mrs. Garrett in “Facts of Life.”

“Lisa, Kimmie, it’s Charlotte,” Rae said with a huge smile in the recorded video. “I’m looking forward to you both being on this Hallmark movie this weekend. I’m all a quiver with anticipation. I know you’ll be brilliant and I love you.”

“What a sweet, special surprise,” Whelchel replied.

“For Better or For Worse” premieres on July 19 on the Hallmark Channel.

Leah Remini: Scientology Split Still ‘Not Easy as Time Goes On’ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/leah-remini-scientology-split-still-not-easy-as-time-goes-on/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/leah-remini-scientology-split-still-not-easy-as-time-goes-on/#comments Wed, 09 Jul 2014 17:12:07 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=320268

Although it has been a busy year for Leah Remini since her high-profile split from the Church of Scientology last July, Remini confirmed today that the religious separation is still “not easy as time goes on.”

The actress, 44, appeared on “Good Morning America” today to promote her new reality show called “Leah Remini: It’s All Relative,” which features her entire family, including her mom, whom she calls the show’s breakout star. But Remini was also not shy about addressing a party she throws in the first episode to thank her friends for their support when she left the Church of Scientology.

“You look through your phone [and] you’re like, ‘Oh I can’t call this person,’” she said. “But you know, as we were in that time of loss and grief, still sad we lost our friends, we also have to look at what we do have. We have great family. We have great friends still in our lives. And we should start celebrating what we have, and that’s why we had the party.”

Remini says she’s “always surprised” by the public’s immense response to her split from the church and doesn’t understand why people find it so fascinating.

“It’s something you’re raised in,” she said. “You’re in it, so you don’t see what … what do you want to know? I have a lot of friends that ask, ‘Oh, I’ve wanted to ask,’ and I’m like, ‘What do you want to know?’ You’re so in it that you don’t really see the fascination.”

Remini, who is also  starring in TV Land’s “The Exes,” was a longtime Scientologist and friends with some of the church’s most famous members, including Tom Cruise, before announcing last year that she was departing from the controversial church.

“I believe that people should be able to question things,” the actress told People magazine at a charity event after the separation. “I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct. That for me, that’s what I’m about.”

And that appears to be exactly what she’s doing by working so closely with her family on her new reality show.

“This is bringing our family even closer together,” Remini said. “We get to work together every day, so I said, ‘Why not?’ I don’t want to be so serious about every decision that I make in my career.  I like entertaining people. I like making people laugh. That’s what I do. I love to work. So I was like, ‘Yes.’ A chance to make someone laugh? Yes.”

‘Married at First Sight’ Reveals Couples Tying the Knot Sight Unseen http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/married-at-first-sight-reveals-couples-tying-the-knot-sight-unseen/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/07/married-at-first-sight-reveals-couples-tying-the-knot-sight-unseen/#comments Tue, 08 Jul 2014 11:21:18 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=320249 140708 gma boudreau1 704x396 Married at First Sight Reveals Couples Tying the Knot Sight Unseen

(ABC News)

We’ve all heard of blind dates, but marrying someone the moment you meet them is a new extreme.

That’s the premise of a controversial new reality show on A&E’s FYI network called “Married at First Sight,” where the bride and groom agree to say “I do” without ever meeting until that long walk down the aisle.

There are six singles looking for love and four relationships experts determined to make lasting matches.

“‘Married at First Sight’ is a social experiment that really seeks to determine if social science can play a role in match making,” Logan Levkoff, a sexologist and one of the experts on the show, told ABC News.

But critics say the show’s premise makes a mockery of marriage.

“My heart goes out to these couples participating on this show,” Paul Brunson, a professional matchmaker, explained. “I really feel like they are being duped. The fact that they are starting their lives in this artificial fishbowl is a great, great illustration of really how bad and how far away we’ve gone with television.”

Once the couples are paired, they commit to marriage without even knowing each other’s first names.

“This could be the best thing that’s ever happened to me, or pretty much the worst decision I’ve ever made,” one contestant describes on the show.

The reality series then documents each couple for the next five weeks before they all ultimately make the big decision to divorce or stay together.

The pairings are based on scientific matchmaking, but skeptics are curious if on-paper compatibility really translates into true love.

Although it has been a rocky year for Tori Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, after his open admission to having an affair made headlines, Spelling confirms today, “Things are getting better.”

The actress, 41, appeared alongside longtime friend and fellow “90210″ superstar Jennie Garth on “Good Morning America” today to promote their new ABC Family show, “Mystery Girls.” But Spelling didn’t hesitate to address the status of her marriage.

“Life is always a work in progress and our relationship is one as well, so we’re moving in the right direction,” she explained.

Spelling added that she had “no regrets” about how shockingly raw and honest she and McDermott were about their tumultuous relationship on their Lifetime show, “True Tori,” which allowed cameras inside the couple’s therapy sessions.

“It was my personal journey and I have no regrets,” she said on “GMA.”

Spelling and Garth’s new show, “Mystery Girls,” is about two former television detective-show starlets who decide to become sleuths in real life, and the two “90210″ stars are thrilled to be working together again.

“It’s like a dream come true,” Spelling said.

The world premiere of “Mystery Girls” airs tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

Everyone’s favorite four-eyed felon is back.

“Orange is the New Black” fans are rejoicing at the news that Alex Vause is here to stay, appearing in every episode next season.

Laura Prepon, who plays Piper’s tumultuous, on again-off again ex-lover, tweeted earlier this week to confirm the news: “I’m in every episode! So excited. It’s great so far!”

That’s a lot more airtime than this season’s four episodes.

Spoiler alert: It looks like the big bad drug lord didn’t ahold of her after all, or perhaps probation office David Crockett is to thank.

If you ever attend a performance of Zach Braff’s Broadway show, you might want to make sure you take a nap first.

Braff, who’s starring in Woody Allen’s first Broadway musical, “Bullets Over Broadway,” revealed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night how he dealt with one sleep-deprived audience member.

“When you’re on stage, you can only see the front row,” Braff said. “I had an old woman fast asleep. Mind you, the show is very loud. There’s gunshots. There’s groups of fifteen men tap-dancing.”

Despite performing in a theater that he described as having hundreds of seats, Braff said he could see that this particular woman was clearly sleeping.

At intermission, Braff said he sent the woman an energy drink along with a note asking her to try to stay awake.

“I said, ‘Look, it’s very, very hard to do the show for the 699 other people if you’re asleep. Would you consider maybe having a couple sips and waking up?’”

When he returned to the stage for the second act, Braff, 39, said the woman’s family propped her up with children’s booster seats.

“They had put sunglasses on her, and the Red Bull was in her hand,” he recalled. “It was like ‘Weekend at Bernie’s.’”

The foul-mouthed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is ending his show “Kitchen Nightmares” after a decade-long run.

“I’ve had a phenomenal 10 years making 123 episodes, 12 seasons, shot across 2 continents, watched by tens of millions of people and sold to over 150 countries,” Ramsay wrote on his website Monday. “It’s been a blast but it’s time to call it a day.”

“Kitchen Nightmares” “really propelled my TV career,” he wrote. “I’m glad I’ve been able to entertain and hopefully help a few people along the way. It’s sad to say goodbye to ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ but I’ll be continuing with my other shows.” Those include “Hell’s Kitchen” and “MasterChef.”

The show has run on both British and American television, where he showed up at struggling restaurants to offer his tough-love advice, often to owners who clearly didn’t want to hear what he had to say. Rare was the show when he didn’t erupt with a barrage of four-letter words.

In his post, he reckoned that the series had “10,197 swear words” and “0.4 gallons of tears.” He also said “the show brought in $37.3 million in ad revenue during the 2012-13 season – more than any other Friday FOX original series that season.”
