Katherine Webb, Miss Alabama 2012 and girlfriend of University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, is enjoying the spotlight following a brief moment on camera during Monday night’s BCS National Championship game.

While Alabama led Notre Dame 14-0 with 4:22 left in the first quarter Monday night, ESPN commentator Brent Musburger chose to once again comment on a beautiful woman in the stands to keep the audience entertained. This time, it was Webb, and the audience certainly took notice.

“You see that lovely lady there, she does go to Auburn, but she’s also Miss Alabama and that’s AJ McCarron’s girlfriend,” he said. “You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women.

“What a beautiful woman. Wow. If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the back yard with pops!” he told viewers.

Fellow ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit quipped: “AJ’s doing some things right.”

Since Monday night, Webb, 23, has landed over 100,000 additional Twitter followers, and shot to the top of Google trends.

As she was admired by the night’s ESPN commentators, Webb stood next to Dee Dee Bonner — her boyfriend’s mom.

Katherine’s mother Leslie Webb told ABCNews.com that her daughter’s newfound fame truly came as a surprise.

“I watched the whole thing!” she said “I was amazed at what was going on as soon as her picture came up on the screen our phones just lit up. We checked out her Twitter, and it was flooded within seconds. We were in awe of it.”

Leslie said that Katherine was unaware she was even on camera at the time, and didn’t realize it until she called her mother at half time — at which point she learned she’d become an instant online sensation.

Since Monday night’s impromptu ESPN feature, her mother says, designers now want Katherine to wear their clothes, and she said that none other than Donald Trump now wants to meet with Katherine and McCarron.

“It’s fun for it to happen to someone like that,” her mother said. “She’s a humble girl, she’s a really sweet girl, and the type of person that likes to make other people happy, puts others before herself, and to help little girls. She loves the lord and loves her life.”

Webb, who won Miss Alabama 2012, did not acknowledge the camera time on her Twitter feed, instead congratulating Alabama on their win. Many others, however, did not let the moment go unnoticed.

Donte Stallworth, wide receiver for the New England Patriots, soon tweeted, “And now ‘AJ McCarrons’ is trending number one right now…not because of his play but because of his ol lady…. And Brent Musburger.”

Yahoo! Sports writer Jeff Passan tweeted, “Sources: A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend to seek restraining order from Brent Musburger at halftime.”

Webb’s publicist Dara Busch told ABCNews.com that she is currently traveling from Miami to Alabama and is unavailable for comment.

College football fans may remember a similar moment seven years ago when the camera lingered on a cheering Florida State student Jenn Sterger — she of the Brett Favre sexting scandal — and Musburger said, “1,500 red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State.”

ESPN and ABC are owned by The Walt Disney Co.

On the off chance that you’ve been in a situation that left you wondering, what would Ryan Lochte do, you will soon have your answers and a reason to shout “Jeah!” – his signature catchphrase.

E! Entertainment announced Monday the network will launch a six-episode reality-TV series featuring the hunky swimmer that will debut in April.  The series will be titled, “What Would Ryan Lochte Do?”

Lochte, 28, is best known for his prowess in the pool. Lochte is an eleven-time Olympic medalist (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012), five of them gold. Lochte’s swimming career took-off at the University of Florida under Olympic men’s swim team coach Greg Troy. He graduated in 2007. Lochte continues to train with Troy and still lives in Gainesville, Fla.

Lochte has recently dabbled in entertainment and has not been shy about his celebrity status. Lochte appeared as an E! News correspondent during Fashion Week and has done cameos on “90210″ and “30 Rock.” He also appeared in a Nissan Sentra commercial.

Lochte admitted he was not a fan of upcoming Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane’s impression of him on “Saturday Night Live,” telling the Associated Press, “I’m just going to let it be and just move forward, but anytime Seth wants to race me in a pool, I’ll be more than happy to.”

He also infamously raced Prince Harry in an early morning swim last summer in Las Vegas.

During the Television Critics Association press tour, E! president Suzanne Kolb revealed that the series will feature the swimmer’s partying and training as he prepares for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Viewers also will catch a glimpse of Lochte building his fashion line, making media appearance and spending time with family and friends, all while searching for the “right gal.”

“He is an incredibly endearing personality who is sexy, entertaining and fun,” Kolb said in a statement. “Watching this show, I believe people will fall into three categories: they want to be him, sleep with him or mother him.”

Lochte tweeted his enthusiasm Monday night to his 1 million-plus followers, “Excited for you all to see! RT @ENews: Ryan Lochte Reality Series Coming to E!: So What Would Ryan Lochte Do?”

The elusive giant squid has never been captured on film. Until now.

Discovery and Japanese partner NHK captured the images of the squid deep beneath the Pacific Ocean during a mission that included more than 400 hours in the abyss, more than 100 sub dives, some at depths greater than 3,000 feet, and a crew of scientists, engineers, technicians and submarine pilots.

“This latest production, four years in the making, is a world-first achievement for television, and I’m excited to share it,” Eileen O’Neill, group President of Discovery and TLC Networks, said in a news release Monday.

The giant squid has for years been at the center of numerous fantastic tales of the sea.

Nearly as long as a school bus and weighing up to a ton, the squid’s eight arms and two tentacles are covered in barbed suction cups, which it uses to force prey – fish, other squid, possibly small whales – into its razor-sharp beak.

The footage will be aired for the first time in the Discovery Channel’s “Monster Squid: The Giant is Real.” The program premieres on Discovery at 8 p.m. ET Jan. 27, and will serve as the season finale for Discovery’s “Curiosity” series.

NHK will air its special on the giant squid Jan. 13.

Photographer’s Hair-Raising Encounter With Polar Bear http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/photographers-hair-raising-encounter-with-polar-bear/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/photographers-hair-raising-encounter-with-polar-bear/#comments Mon, 07 Jan 2013 11:24:01 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=279088 Wildlife photographer Gordon Buchanan’s close-up encounter with a polar bear in Arctic Norway resulted in some shocking video, and even Buchanan admits the stunt terrified him.

“It was a strange mixture of terror and comedy because it felt like, it just felt like a monumentally stupid thing to do. But it was incredible,” Buchanan told the BBC, speaking of the footage he shot for the network’s documentary series titled “The Polar Bear Family and Me.”

Buchanan recorded the encounter while safely encased inside a small transparent cage on the snow.  Cameras inside and out recorded the curious bear’s approach. The animal sniffs at the cage before it begins to paw and claw at it, and then push and shove.

The animal stands upright on its hind legs to further shake the pod. Standing 8 feet tall and weighing 1,000 pounds, the bear dwarfs the protective enclosure.

The encounter with the bear lasts for 40 minutes, during which Buchanan provides a running account of what’s happening.

“Being this close, I have an appreciation for what this animal is, it is one of the most powerful animals on the planet, one of the most intimidating animals on the planet, and one of the few animals that actually see us as food,” he says from inside the enclosure.

He called the encounter “one of the most terrifying things that I’ve ever done … .”

“The Polar Bear Family and Me,” a three-part documentary series, will begin 9:30 p.m. Jan. 7 on BBC Two.

‘Ruby’ Today: Reality Star Dishes on Show’s Failure http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/ruby-today-reality-star-dishes-on-shows-failure/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/ruby-today-reality-star-dishes-on-shows-failure/#comments Fri, 04 Jan 2013 18:34:43 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=279046 ht ruby nt 130104 wblog Ruby Today: Reality Star Dishes on Shows Failure

By Robert Zepeda and Erica Butler

Starving herself then bingeing on Cool Whip and Graham crackers; shifting her weight to trick the scale; even disguising herself and going through McDonald’s Drive-Thru — these are the kinds of self-sabotage behaviors “Ruby,” the hit weight-loss reality show that ran from 2008 to 2011, was supposed to be an antidote to.

But that’s what Ruby Gettinger, the show’s star, did, she said in an interview with “20/20.”

Watch the full story on “20/20″ TONIGHT at 10 ET

For four seasons, “Ruby,” which aired on the Style Network, followed Gettinger’s every move as she struggled to go from more than 700 pounds to 250. Her bubbly personality won hundreds of thousands of fans, who cheered her on through achievements like driving, riding a bike and swimming.

Dr. Oz, Regis and Kelly and even Oprah came calling, making Ruby the face of obesity.

With the show came counselors, a nutrition plan, trainers — all working toward the goal: 250 pounds.

But secretly, Gettinger now says, off camera her goal was dramatically different.

“I never, ever say this, but in my head, my goal was 128,” Gettinger told ABC News’ Amy Robach. “I wanted to be so thin that someone would look at me and say, ‘Are you anorexic?’”

She didn’t quite get to 128, but after season one, she was at 373, almost 130 pounds less than where she began. In the second season, while having some personal setbacks, she still managed to pull out a new low, 357. At the start of season three, Ruby was arguably one of the most documented stories of obesity and weight loss in America.

While the show brought on a celebrity high, the pressure to keep losing was bringing her down, causing stress and meltdowns.

“I didn’t realize this is such an addiction,” Gettinger said. “Like alcoholism, drugs, you know?”

Tennie McCarty, who was a counselor on “Ruby,” runs Shades of Hope, a treatment center for those with eating disorders. She said food addiction is not only real — it can be even worse than alcohol and drugs.

“[With] alcoholism, drug addiction, nicotine addiction … [y]ou could live the rest of your life and not drink alcohol, take drugs or smoke nicotine,” she said, whereas food is everywhere, and you have to eat.

Ruby was spiraling out of control — and going off her program for healthy weight loss.

“There was a lot of pressure,” she said. “It made me start starving myself to death.  I literally did not eat for four days because I knew I had to weigh. … And then after I weighed, I would binge eat.”

One day, Gettinger’s niece came over, and she had some Chicken McNuggets.

“For a week after that,” Gettinger said, “I would go through the Drive-Thru — and I’m not kidding you — put a hat on, glasses, so no one would recognize me. … But just in case they’d recognize me, I would have the phone like this and go, Okay, now, what is it that you wanted? … It was two McNuggets? Okay. … That’s just horrible to admit. But it was almost like just that one bit triggers something in me.”

Gettinger stopped using her exercise equipment, and covered up her secret.

“When I was in a bad place I didn’t use them at all. I’d get a washcloth and dust them off. I didn’t want people to think, ‘She’s not using her equipment.’”

But the numbers on the scale couldn’t lie, so Gettinger devised a way to deceive the scale, the show and the fans rooting for her.

“I could figure out a way to lean to this way or that way,” Gettinger said. “I could make a 28-to-30-pound difference.”

She even believed her own lie, Gettinger said.

“[I was] almost getting excited later on in the day, because people are bragging about the number that I have convinced myself that is the number, too,” she said.

The show’s producers weren’t fooled and sent Gettinger to a weight-loss camp to restore her motivation. Nothing worked, and “Ruby” was cancelled, leaving fans wondering what happened.

“[The producers] said, ‘We love you … we’re just not going to continue the show,” Gettinger said. “No one said this, but my personal belief is [they cancelled it] because I gained weight,” she added. She said she blamed herself for the show’s end and for “letting so many people down.”

Soon after the show ended, Gettinger’s brother died. She lay in bed, depressed and eating, she said. She gained 50 pounds, taking her back almost to 400.

“I woke up with, like, This is it, I’m doing this. It’s not about the show; it’s not about anything else. I got to finish this for me.”

Desperate and with no money, Gettinger turned to her former trainers from the TV show.

“I said, Of course, I’m here for you no matter what,” said Shazia Edmonds. “That phone call to me was so refreshing. It felt like she gets it, she wants to do it on her own.”

Gettinger has named her new campaign Ruby’s Challenge, and has a website to encourage fans to watch her progress and join themselves. She is back in the gym regularly and eating right, and has worked her weight down to 360.

Gettinger said she had learned some hard yet valuable lessons.

“The hard road is the best road, and just in the past two months I have never worked out [so] hard, been so strict, been so consistent.”

In a conversation with Oprah Winfrey set to air Sunday, David Letterman says he has no one to blame but himself for the 2009 sex scandal in which he admitted to having affairs with multiple “Late Show” staff members.

“I feel better about myself, my relationship with my wife is never better, and it’s just because I want to be the person I thought I was and probably was pretending I was,” Letterman says in a newly released  clip from the upcoming episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter.”

The late-night host adds, “I hurt a lot of people, I have no one to blame but myself.”

Letterman revealed the affairs in an on-air statement on Oct. 1, 2009, after a former CBS News producer attempted to extort $2 million from him.

As previously reported, Letterman also discusses his rivalry with Jay Leno during the interview, which airs on OWN Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

It seems that Jimmy Kimmel has much more respect for David Letterman than his other late-night rival, Jay Leno.

The ABC host is the cover boy of the new issue of Rolling Stone. The New York Daily News, which obtained an advance copy of the issue, reported that Kimmel said of Leno, “As a comedian, you can’t not have disdain for what he’s done: He totally sold out.”

Kimmel, who moves his show from midnight to the 11:35 p.m. ET slot next week, said the NBC “Tonight Show” host “was a master chef who opened a Burger King.”

Kimmel has voiced his negative feelings for Leno a few times in recent years. In 2010, he impersonated Leno on his program, and he also made an appearance on Leno’s now-defunct primetime talk show, chastising him for planning a return to “The Tonight Show” after Conan O’Brien was forced out. And last year, at a New York City event, Kimmel said of Leno, “F*** him.”

In his Rolling Stone interview, Kimmel is more complimentary of Letterman, his childhood idol.

“If I beat David Letterman in the ratings, does that mean I’m better than Letterman? No f***ing way,” he said.

Kimmel also had nice things to say about Leno’s NBC late-night colleague, Jimmy Fallon.

“People are going to compare me and him for years to come — we’re being positioned as the Leno and Letterman of the next round,” he said. “I like it because he’s a very worthy competitor.”

The issue of Rolling Stone featuring Kimmel hits newsstands Friday.

Robin Roberts: ‘GMA’ Anchor Celebrates ‘Major Milestone’ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/robin-roberts-gma-anchor-celebrates-major-milestone/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/01/robin-roberts-gma-anchor-celebrates-major-milestone/#comments Tue, 01 Jan 2013 14:03:33 +0000 ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/?p=278928 “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts got an early start on her New Year’s celebrations, marking a “major milestone” in her recovery from the bone marrow transplant she underwent in September

“Every morning I mark the day post my bone marrow transplant. Today I reached a major milestone…Day 100! Blessings..XO,” Roberts, 52, tweeted this weekend, along with a picture of herself clad in a Santa hat in front of a Christmas tree decorated with an ornament that said “Faith.”

On the day that Roberts received the transplant, her doctor told “GMA” viewers that 100 days post-transplant marks a crucial step in the recovery process.

We have to watch patients super closely for 100 days. We don’t trust anything for the first 100 days. After that, we’re happy,” Dr. Gail Roboz, the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center oncologist who is treating Robin told “GMA.”

“With cancer patients, we use five years as a benchmark to a cure. When someone has had a marrow transplant, we’ll be watching her for life, to see if she’s having symptoms.”

Just days after celebrating her milestone, Roberts took to Facebook to wish all those who have supported her over the past year a happy New Year.

“I couldn’t let the year end without saying…thank you.  Thank you for your prayers, positive energy and well wishes,” she wrote.  ”My sister, Dorothy, always comes up with a family motto for the new year. This year’s is: “All will be serene in 2013.”

Roberts, a breast cancer survivor, underwent the transplant to treat MDS, a bone marrow disorder that affects blood-cell production.  The transplant was a five-minute procedure in which the donor cells from Robin’s sister, Sally-Ann, were injected into Robin’s system through a syringe.

On the heels of her 100-day milestone, Roberts also got a belated Christmas present, welcoming her beloved Jack Russell terrier, K.J., back home. They were separated because of Roberts’ weakened immune system.

“Look who made it back for my 100 day celebration…KJ!! We just keep staring at each..can’t believe she’s finally home,” Roberts tweeted Saturday.

The “GMA” anchor made a special appearance just last week at the New York City wedding of her “GMA” colleague Sam Champion to Rubem Robierb.  Roberts played a part in the nuptials, reading a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
