Sometimes the best part of surprise someone is the countdown to the surprise itself. Today’s segment 7 was in the works for weeks to the glee of many on our staff waiting to surprise our Josh Elliott on hidden camera when we “yarnbombed” his office.
Our production assistant Bethany pitched a story on “yarnbombing” — the crocheting phenomenon that’s popping up all over the place. Passionate knitters taking to the streets wrapping everyday items in yards of yarn. Our production associate Courtney even saw one right around the corner from the studio swathed in yarn by the crew at local home store Domus. Courtney called them up and asked if they would bring a little surprise color to Josh’s life.
After two weeks of planning a secret crochet strategy, the “replacement chair” was ready. Props came in early to help Courtney switch out Josh’s chair in the wee hours of the morning before he rolled into work. Our stealth turn at so-called “grandma graffiti” was done — the chair swathed in Superman and Spiderman colors — and we turned on the hidden camera.
Take a look below at what happened when Josh saw his new chair.
It was also a big company day for us — Sam was sent on the enviable assignment (and all our other anchors volunteered to join him) of helping open Disney’s new Hawaiian resort Aulani.
