1992 First Female African American Senator

Carol Mosley Braun was sworn in as senator on opening day of the 103rd Congress.  Braun, the first African American woman in the Senate, served as a representative for Illinois until 1999.  She campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, but dropped out before the Iowa caucus.
