1965 Malcolm X Assassinated

On Feb 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated while addressing the Organization of Afro-American Unity at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City.  He was shot by members of the Nation of Islam, a group that he had been suspended from a couple years earlier.

1972 President Nixon Meets Mao Zedong

During his visit to China, President Richard Nixon met with Mao Zedong before a dinner at the Great Hall in Peking.  Nixon's week-long visit was part of an effort improve diplomatic relations with the communist nation.

The president was not received with fanfare from the public in China.  Tiananmen Square was quiet and nearly empty on the first day of his trip:
